I keep hearing stories about peopel setting up a deal through Dell via online order and then calling a sales rep and easily knocking off another $100-$200, even up to $500 off the price they were seeing online.
Today I gave this a try and talked to 2 different sales reps. They wouldn't budge and claimed my $1150 subtotal was hitting rock bottom and Dell was even losing money on the deal (wow, like I care...)
I tried a 3rd time after receiving an addition 5% off Dell EPP and the guy come sup with the same config for like $8 cheaper even though I have no idea how. He's telling me my new subtotal of $1060 is hitting rock bottom now and there's ABSOLUTELY NOTHING he can do... So he sends me his quote via email. Later tonight I check out my configuration with an additional 2% off via DPA account and now I'm down to $1030 for this system....
WTF is wrong with these sales reps? I must really suck over the phone. during 2 of my conversations with 2 different reps I attempted to ask for a manager to see what they could do and both times I was simply told the manager cant do anything for me and it was left at that. I THOUGHT I was being persistant and aggressive on the phone, but apparently not. I've told each and everyone of them "If you can do something better for me I'm ready to buy it right here right now" and still no luck.
Even though my price is pretty good, I'm frustrated as all heck wondering why I'm not able to get some deals I see other people get by simply calling a Dell Rep.
I plan on ordering my system tomorrow for sure. Any tips in this area would be great when calling a Dell rep would be great... Do I need to be extremely pushy, rude, and demand a manager? Do I need to be nice and kind and ask? Or should I place an order, cancel it, and then demand a better deal? Obviously, whatever I'm doing is wrong... and it's VERY frustrating.
P.S. Yes I'm trying to squeeze every penny I can out of this laptop I'm buying. ^_^

I prefer to order over the phone, because I get better service and a better price.
If you order over the phone, you get price matching if the price is lowered within a short period of time, better deals, more discounts, faster replacements, better service, among other things... -
the "deals" you are hearing about are almost always people who get some kind of discount or freebie because of a problem with their computer or a problem with the order process and the freebie/deal is to give the customer something for their trouble.
you are not going to have much luck just calling up and trying to make them make the computer cheaper.
i would suggest moving on from dell if you aren't satisfied.
also, this is sales, not service; the two depts are unrelated. -
I had been getting different pricing from a few different sales reps for the past two weeks. I was told their sales reps are divided into groups of 12 and each has a manager. Each of these managers puts together their own 'Manager Special' which are offered by their 12 people. So I'm thinking this is why I get some new "deal" everytime I call. You're getting a different 'group' every time.
Anyway, day or so later I got two follow up calls from sales people who seemed to be trying to "close the deal"... they seemed to have more authority and could be more flexible with there pricing. She kept putting me on hold and kept playing with deals and numbers, and acted like she was giving it to me for free, but it was the best price i had gotten, so I ordered the e1705 from her. I decided the next day i didnt want the 17" screen and cancelled. She called me back wondering why i cancelled, but couldnt offer me a good enough price on the smaller size(e1505). Even though i downgraded a few options, she gave me the same price as my original order, and kept trying to get me to reorder the SAME thing(17")!! so i said "thanks anyway, but i guess i'll just have to wait". I had calculated what i thought the difference in price should be and wasnt going to be pushed into something i didnt want or need. THEN she started saying she would work with me to get a better price on the system i wanted. I didnt have enough time to go another round with her, so i said i'd call her back. I havent called back, since i decided to order the D820, which falls under the Small Business department. So, unless you're in a rush, you might want to wait a bit. I dont know what configuration you're looking at , but it is possible that is the best deal they can do on that particular one. Maybe wait for them to follow up with you. You might get a rep that has more authority. -
if you keep an eye on the deal sites, usually you'll end up with a much better deal than if you can get over the phone.
