The Orange Box. You can run it at max settings and it includes 5 games in one.

I second GRAW, though it can be frustratingly hard. Good if you like the realistic strategy shooters as opposed to the run-and-gunners.

Orange Box is a deal, FEAR, and Bioshock will run acceptably well on your 8600M GT although it is a bit more story-based than realistic - creepy as hell though.

I went through the Crysis requirements and that one might be a bit marginal; according to EA's minimum rig, it looks to be a good bit tougher than Bioshock on the hardware.

If you havnt tried Armed Assault (ArmA) then I'd highly recommend it. It's similar to BF2 but not as "cartoonish", IMO. I play regularly with a small group of 5 guys using the Evolution map. Its tons of fun and a great co-op squad based FPS. If you do check it out and feel like playing with a fun group of guys PM me and I'll shoot you the info.

And last but not least....Pop-It on pogo.com.
okay, so it doesn't require a lot of graphics muscle and will probably run on your grandma's old packard-bell...but its still a lot of fun!! :)

*Shameless plug for my own thread*
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=2525610

There's quite a lot of FPS's (all Free and Full version, not Demos) in there that will run fine on your Lappy.

FEAR Combat is a definite Download. One of THE best Free Multiplayer Only FPS. It's commercial quality... because it's from the retail game (the multi-player portion), haha :p.

Try D2X-XL. It is really a mix of a flight simulator and a war game. And yes, it works pretty well on a GF 8600 GT, provided you don't use ridiculous settings.
