Hi all, Just got curious what are the games that can be played at nice frame rate on dell 1558[ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470]. Some games which tried on my new machine are as follows:

    1. Race Driver : GRID - Plays at nice frame rate.[Radeon X1300 or above]
    2. DIRT 2 - need to really lower the settings to play.[Radeon X1550]
    3. GTA 4 - failed to play...

I mainly play World of Warcraft @ 1920x1080, custom settings. Frame rate isn't too bad when playing unless it's a city where there are tons of PCs.

    Tried :)

Dark sector, Mass Effect 2 at full settings....... works fine....
    Finally something is working:

I wonder the same thing. Is there any card that's better that you can get in a laptop?

I got my dell studio just before the 5470 came out! But the 4570 is quite good at low-medium settings for games released till the end of last year!

I could play Assassins Creed 2 on mine at 1280x720 everythin except AA maxed with frame rates from 15 to 25! Not bad for a laptop of this price!

I'm sure the 5470 performs equally if not way better than the 4570

    Core i5 520M 2.4 GHz
    4GB RAM | 1920x1080 | ATI Mobility HD 4570

Well cannot say anything for that, but 5470 failed the Game-o-meter for AC2. Also checked some forums, 4570 also runs GTA4 which is running jerky on 5470. Which really disappointed....

There are many cards on the market to be had that far surpass this one in gaming performance. Unfortunately, it is the best Dell currently offers in their 1558 right now.

I actually ordered a 1558 and ended up cancelling it. I knew that I would have buyer's remorse if I stuck with that video card. It is currently the weak link in the line. If dell decides to drop a HD 56xx or a HD 58xx in it, then I would possibly reconsider.

Notebookcheck.net ranks the HD5470 as the 98th most powerful mobile GPU.

Even though notebookcheck is far from perfect in their rankings it still gives you an idea that the HD5470 is a middle class card at best.

This is not a gaming laptop, per se. The 5470 is a decent GPU for everyday tasks and it will play most games fine, albeit at either lower frame rate or with lower graphical settings. If anyone is looking for a hardcore or moderately powerful gaming laptop, then I would suggest looking at a different line. Overall, the Studio 1558 is a good laptop for games just don't expect gaming nirvana.

I just tried burnout paradise and Blur..

Burnout paradise plays at 1080p with medium settings at 30-50 fps! not bad!

Blur at 1080p n low settings plays at 20 fps!

Thats due to the ATI catalyst.. wat u could do is change the desktop resolution to the lower resolution that u had on game.. go to desktop and displays on the Catalyst center and click on that small triangle on the tiny monitor thing on the bottom.. it'll give u an option to configure.. choose that n u can see that u can choose full screen there..

i had constantly read all the the threads and replies posted related to ATI HD 5470, some are advising dell to drop it and some are even suggesting which model to place. guys tell me one thing do you think such big company is just a bunch of idiots , nothing more, consider for a second why dell has only preffered to use hd 5470 in indian edition of their laptop, i mean they don't even make a cent out of it, whenever a company big as dell places a specification on their website's menu card , it's not just they had dreamt about and placed it next day when they get to their office.
their is a sequential process involved in selecting every single part of laptop/notebook. thousand's of employees are put to work whenever they had to release a new or upgraded configuration. and you know what those employes do, first they check the report that came directly from users using hd 5470, then their feedback, then they check the atmosphere conditions of the country, then the stage of advancement of technology of the country is been scanned, then another sources like forums database all around the internet are checked one by one continuosly, then a primary report is prepared and send to manufacturing cell. then the report is reviewed 10 times approx. and after this painfull task a finalised version is prepared which leads to the selection of graphics card and the same above written procedure is followed to maintain standards in selection of other parts.
it is not wise to write like "dell should drop this model, should drop that model, so will i think to buy". if all people think like medeocars like these technology and its users will get to a stand off and there will be no development

i am myself a user of dell lappy 1558 with ati mobility radeon hd 5470 and my point of view is it is fine no excellent and highest available grahic card in INDIA. so if a person which lives in india has to buy a laptop, with the highest available configuration it would be the top most model.

I haven't tried these games, but I did run prime 95 and furmark for 20 minutes straight yesterday. The hottest I got the GPU to was 83 Celsius. The CPU made it to 69 Celsius (very romantic ;))

    Thanks :D

Cost aside, what would you advise among the following

    1. Studio 15( i5 520, 1080p, Ati HD 5470 1Gb)
    2. Sony E (i5 520, 720p, HD 5650 1Gb)
3.HP Envy14 (i5 520, 1600*900, HD 5650 -1Gb, HP Radiance Display)- seems to be perfect but not released here yet.
    4.Vostro 3500(i5 520, 720p, Nvidia 310M, 512MB Graphics Card

Guys, please help me in deciding and do suggest other alternatives, if any(no acer please)

    thanks a lot in advance

First, Is cost having any concern or not. If you compare same hardware rig in all the brands you mentioned, I guess Dell will cost you least.

But I din't find ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 good enough for gaming....

I think wen ur concerned bout gaming just go for the graphic card.. everythin else almost is secondary! cpu is not as much of a biggie as the GPU.. the envy 14 looks really good... n the sony as well

@neodevil,of the four options you have mentioned, HP envy 14 is best overall. you can also check the toshiba qosmio series. by the way, you can get more reply if you post your query in the sub-forum concerned with laptop purchase.

as such laptops are not build for high res gaming. You really need a very high config to reach to full res and all settings on.

Hello guys. I intend in buying an i5 notebook with a 5470 video card and except the gaming performance, I would like to know how well does this card decode HD video, 720p and 1080p, on an mpeg-4 avc and a flash youtube hd video. Can it fully decode these videos? What is the CPU usage?

Hell no ... It started again.

Steam updated around a weak back and I played the game with settings as :

    resolution : 1024X 768
    shadow : medium @ 23-25 FPS

Yesterday when I tried again , it came back to 10 FPS again with above settings.
Also I got the scroll message when the game start to update the graphics driver. When I tried that it showed the driver are upto date.

It is really going on its own... any help guys...

Why it's always reinstall that works ? Finally got it fine. Steps that are followed:

    1. Scanned by spy-bot.
    2. MSE scan
    3. uninstalled all video driver in normal mode.
    4. uninstalled all video driver in safe mode by driver sweeper.( Do not delete the nvidia chipset driver).
    5. Cleaned all ATI registry through Cc-cleaner.
    6. Manually searched for any left over in registry and cleaned 3 entries ( that means cc-cleaner got -3).
    7. Downloaded latest driver from ATI site directly. (As system showed driver already updated, which was wrong.)
    8. Installed latest driver.
    10. Restarted machine.

Done. Now when I played game it is showing 30FPS for Res : 1024X768 and medium shadow. Quite a satisfactory count.
