No, the 8400M GS 128MB versions do exist even in other notebooks. The 8400M GS has a 256MB and 128MB memory versions, but Dell only issued 128MB DDR2 versions for the 1720.

Same with the 8600M GT, which has 256MB memory offered in the 1720, but there are 512MB versions as well but never issued for the 1720s.

those 8400m GS cards should overclock pretty well, like 50%+ on the core (until they just die from the BGA problem).

avoid 8400m GS if you can as my Vostro GPU died after about 2 years.
There are many threads on the issue with 8400M GPU that it overheats and eventually dies.

That only applies to affected Dell models, yours included. Your 8400M GS is soldered onto the board, the 1720 uses proprietary removable 8400Ms. To my observation operating temperatures run differently between the 1720 (Appoxmately running at 70*C max) and they're known to keep components very cool, as opposed to your 8400M which runs alot hotter (Appox. 70 - 100*C) is quite a known issue in your 1400. The 1720 is also not under Dell's list of affected models and thus also no warranty extention is given.

Haha, here I am with an Overclocked + BIOS flash + Powermizer Disabled 8600M continually for 2.6 years (and counting) and it still runs cool and nice under 40*C and maxes at 65*C. Still waiting for it to fail.

Either way, they're old cards, I wouldn't bother anymore about them, whether they fail or not. Just get a new notebook and be done with it. ;)
