Well, round two. I have been playing with the E1705 replacement Dell sent. Sadly, the same heat issue exists.
I'm starting to think this is common with the 'crippled' Geforce 7800 Go they are slapping in these days.
Basically, from boot up - launching Everest, my GPU temp is reported at 70c within a few minutes (this is just browsing and checking email peeps - no gaming).
The temp will climb to 80c within a few minutes at which time the fans kick in. Within a minute or so of the fans turning on, the temp is back down to 70c. As soon as the fans shut off, it takes no more than 4 minutes before the fans kick on back at 80c.
I could live with the fans turning on, but typing on this thing is nuts. My right hand feels like I have it over a burner on a stove...
Is this typical???? I'm using the stock Dell driver (v.78.59).
Ambient room temp is a nice mild 65 degrees F.
Arggghhhh...

Do you know of a good "free" software which can tell me the heat of the different components of my notebook?
-
I used the stock drivers for a while and experienced the same thing. Right now, I'm using v 81.97 and it hasn't made a difference. Like you said, it climbs to 80, fans kick in, goes down to 70, fans turn off, and then the entire process repeats itself.
I don't really feel any heat on my right hand while typing. The heat is mostly concentrated in the top right corner of the base. Although parts of the keyboard get a little warm, the effect is trivial since only my fingers are touching it. -
I also have the same exact issue. However, after having overclocked to the 7800 to 350, the upper right portion of the laptop feels much cooler to the touch (even though it's still doing that cycling thing).
-
Same thing for me too... It is pretty annoying. Hopefully the E1705 will be able to accept the nvidia 8800 or whatever they call it. I dont want to deal with this Heat the whole time I own this notebook.
Oh... Im using an extreem g driver with a 365 / 900 OC, and the heat is acutally similar to what it was at 250. Also the nice thing about this driver is there is an option to "always run fans". It doesnt always work lol... but it does seem to help keep them on most of the time, and it usualy will continue to run the fan even after it hits 70C.
A lot of times my notebook will just be sitting there at ~60C and the fan will still be on. -
What I'm bothered most by are the options one has to resolve this heat issue.
1. Call Dell and insist on a refund/replacement/upgrade to the 7900.
2. Purchase an aftermarket cooling solution for something that appears to be faulty by design.
or
3. Live with high temps and horrible battery life from having the fans on constantly.
Kind of strange that this whole 'Centrino Duo' thing was actually supposed to lower temps. Dell quality certainly has taken a nose dive I think.
Sorry for the negativity...
Side note: I'd be interested to know if the M1710 suffers from the same issue. If not, maybe I will insist on a refund and just go with that one. $3000 just to get a notebook that doesnt feel like a fire hazzard - sad. -
I got my E1705 overcloked to 362/879 and i just put a normal fan house right side of the laptop and it keeps it at 60 always the good thing is while playing games never goes to 80. the most i seen was 75. But without it don't even wanna know.
-
does the e1705 setup with the 7900 GS have the same heat problems? I'm thinking about getting this setup, granted the 7900 GS has better cooling and would give me some kind of "real world" perforamnce advantage over the 7800.
-
I'm quite sure the 7900GS runs cooler than the 7800. It also uses less power, and therefore is more efficient.
-
I just got off of Dell Service Chat and they are sending me a new unit because one of my fans died. If it continues to have problems, I'll try to get a 7900GS out of the deal. They are really awesome cards. I wish the the ATI Mobile X1800 and X1900 GPUs were offered though, ATI has the whole power/heat thing nailed with their mobile offerings.
-
I have sent an e-mail to tech support on this...even mentioned maybe them replacing my go7800 with a go7900gs if there was no fix...haha
-
WOW...the problem was so easy to fix. The reason the fan does not come on until 82C is....dust buildup. Who knew....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I understand your concern regarding the system heat issue.
I am taking the ownership to resolve the issue to your complete satisfaction.
Please note that, this issue could arise due to the fan, heatsink or the video card itself.
The problem is that dust collects inside the computer, on the heatsink, thereby inhibiting its
ability to transfer heat off of the processor. As such, the computer overheats. To resolve
issue, use some type of forced air (ie: a can of compressed air) to blow into the fan vent on
the bottom vent and the two cooling vents located on the back and side of the computer.
However, if the issue still persist then I will setup a depot service for thorough chekup and
repair of the system. The depot technician will accordingly replace the part.
I request your valuable time and kind co-operation and so that this issue should be resolved at
the earliest. -
ah dust, the natural enemy of computers.
-
Yes, dust the old enemy of the BIOS. Stops communication between BIOS and video card.
-
how do you guys like the duo chip? Is it the best laptop chip out RIGHT NOW? I hear the turion x2 is coming out, but it doesn't sound like it's going to be better than the duo?
-
Oh Please! Dust?!?! LOL! I was seeing this issue on a completely new system Dell sent me. Dust... yeah right. Try poor design. I finally was able to arrange for a full refund for this hot plate.
Prepaid waybill is on its way and its going back. I am either going to go with the M1710 or just stick with the E1705 and opt for the 7900 option. With the lower voltage reqs I'm sure it will be a bit cooler.
I just configured a 1705 via my employers EPP login and it turns out I'll save 200... figures.
I have to ask (although I'm sure we have no data as yet) - Will Dell short change this incarnation of the 7900GS and underclock it or will it be the same as the XPS M1710 version. Hmmmmm...
I figure if I'm going to drop 2 grand, I might as well toss in an additional 1k and go full out for the M1710. -
If I did not drag my laptops through evil custom checks, mash them into overhead bins and shake the crap out of them on helicopters..I would LIKE to have the M1710! The fact that my better half would beat me to death has nothing to do with it
Let us know! -
Batboy,
Are you within the 21 warrantee period of your replacement? I'm debating whether or not I should hassle Dell about dealing with the go 7800 heat issue, seeing as I got this e1705 back in February/March. Other than excessive heat, I can't think of how this issue would fall under one of my other warrantees in order to warrent a return without me being charged.
Another question, did it take a lot of convincing for you to get your refund? -
Tax:
Hell no - I received my first E1705 on 2/14. I contacted support with the heat and buzzing issue on 2/20 and they claimed it was normal for a new laptop (tried to tell me it was a 'break-in period' - LOL).
So, after countless calls to India and several failed attempts to resolve the issues (two tech visits and they replaced: LCD, both fans, battery, AC adapter AND LOWER housing of the lappie - the tech thought it would help, once again I was ROFLMAO) - I was finally able to get them to kit another lappie for me. Original one went back. The replacement shows the same exact heat issue - 70c, two minutes 80-82c and fans kick on, then within a few minutes its right back to 82c).
After a very nasty blog post a rep from Dell Corporate contacted me - I was quite suprised to say the least.
The rep has arranged for a full refund upon receipt of the replacement lappie. I was able to use the fact I contacted support within the first 21 days of receipt of the lappie as a fallback. They couldn't argue with me on that point. I am currently waiting for the airbill and box to arrive to send it back.
And now for the kicker - I asked about a %off if I ordered a M1705 on the spot - I explained I wanted the lower voltage 7900 card (this was before they listed it as an option on the 1705). The rep said Dell did not do %off as compensation. I kindly responded that I would be moving to HP for my mobile computing needs. The rep said - 'I understand'.
Geez. Talk about pissing away a customer. I still don't know if I am going to give them another chance. If I do, I will only order via my employer's EPP account. As I understand it, EPP purchases enjoy the benefit of being routed to US based call centers for support. I am also considering the new Mac lappie - hell if it will run Windows now - maybe.
Overall, this whole purchase has been a nightmare. Wow - Everest is telling me the GPU is at 85c right now - fans just came on and my right hand feels like its over a burner plate.
Good luck! -
O brother, BatBoy! I got an e1705 still in its packaging, honestly hoping I won't have to incur similar headaches. Anyway, I've posted a few threads to try to decide whether or not it's worth keeping the e1705 w/ 7800 option. If anyone's intereted (like heck you ain't!) join us here:
