I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 with a Geforce go 7900 GS running on XP MCE SP2. It has been working pretty well for now over 1.5 years but lately I've been getting into trouble.

The thing is: I got myself need for speed pro street and my system started getting bluescreens while gaming.
The Bluescreen error was: NMI: Parity Check. Memory Parity Error.

I installed the newest drivers from dell and got the game working for at least 2 days.

Now, since 1 week I've been getting this problem when booting up my pc.

After XP finished starting up, I get a black screen. Just a black screen. The only thing I can do is to start up in secure mode and deinstall my nvidia drivers. But as we all know, standart windows drivers suck.

Same thing un der Ubuntu: When the login screen should be showing up, I get a black screen.

This is an image of what my xp startup screen looks like.

I guess this problem may be driver related. Also: Those tiny lines also show up on my external display, so it isnt display related.

I was hoping if some of you guys also had problems of this kind somewhen in the last time.

    Thanks already for your answers!

Seems like a hardware issue. Go to BIOS. If the lines show up there it is certainly hardware related.

I am running precisely those drivers right now and I'm not experiencing any better results.

I guess I have the same problem as other people do. because I am also getting those NMI memory parity check errors.

Does anyone know if Dell does replace the system even if the warranty is gone for already a half year? At least they could replace my graphics card for free because its their fault if they sell me products full of errors...

    thanks

wait. you installed software and drivers that gave you problems instantly, but instead of stopping the use of that program or those drivers, you continued to do so until your system was unusable.

    and now, you blame dell?

    you cannot be serious.

    no no...

those errors (bluescreens) were displaying the same way they do now just with the dell drivers.

so the driver exchange did do nothing.

Is the 7900GS less reliable than the 7950GTX?
Seems like I've been seeing a lot of posts about 7900GS problems recently.

Same problem - card has failed. I'll boot in safe mode, but that's it.
If you boot it in diagnostic mode, it'll fail vid memory tests.
Dell will want $500 to fix it.
The main problem is that the single pipe version of the 7900gs card was not enough to keep the card cool...
The fix requires stripping the laptop to the board, modifing the case slightly and installing a new dual pipe card. Need help or want it fixed - email me at [email protected]

Definetly not a driver issue if it's showing up on the bios screen and on windows boot. The drivers aren't even loaded at the point.

Definetly sounds like hardware failure. Playing games stresses your system. If you've had the system for 1.5 years how many times have you done a thorough dusting?

Avid gamers know all too well how bad dust can cause overheating of system components such as gpu's and ram. You should be doing a thorough cleaning every 2-3months to keep temperatures down and minimizing stress on your system.

Sounds like you were clogged with dust, stressed the system with your game and fried your gfx card.

Been there, and yes it sucks, especially since you're out of warranty.

It doesn't have to be an abuse or neglect issue - although both can play into the failure.

There's a reason that the later revs of the 7900gs went to a dual pipe structure.. The Rev 00 versions, which are the late 2006 laptops, have a single pipe - less than 50% of the cooling capacity of the later 7900gs'.

My system was clean and dust free inside.. I'm not a heavy gamer.

It's a PITA fix, but is repairable.. you just don't want dell to do it at $500 for the repair...
