I'm in the market for a new laptop, seeing as my XPS M1530 just bit the dust, and am probably going to jump on the Inspiration 15R SE model. However, with Windows 8 coming out in less than two weeks, I wanted to ask some of you who have bought a lot of computers over the years if I should wait 10 days or not?

The reasons I'm considering waiting are...

    1) Discounts. Thinking DELL might use W8 as an excuse to have a little sale and therefore I could save money.

    2) Upgrades. Maybe DELL adds another year of service or ups a hard drive or processor to convince people to order now.

    3) Models. I'm not in the market for a tablet, but I know some companies are planning to release new laptop models - not sure if anyone knows whether or not that will be the case for DELL?

One thing I am not concerned about is W8 itself. I'll only use the desktop version anyway so if I get 7 and don't upgrade (or get the free upgrade to 8 anyway), it doesn't really matter to me.

Your advice and insight is much appreciated.

Don't think they will do a sale because of Windows 8... In fact, it might be the opposite, things might gets delayed... Because if people are all waiting for Windows 8, it might just bump the orders and instead of 2 weeks, it might take more time... and with Christmas coming up, don't expect them to make too much sales at this time of the year, let alone the black friday, but that will be on dell.com only i guess... So wait 10 days or not, won't do much, you only risk of having to wait more time to get it if they get too many orders when W8 will be available.

Good advice. Thanks. My main concern above all else was new models.

Anyone else want to chime in to agree/disagree? I want to get the order in soon.

No new technology got out for laptop world... the new ivy bridge was the great things to hit that market this summer, and the new 17RSE and 15RSE are the new things for a while... don't expect new models anytime soon.

Sorry to revive a dead post. However --

As for Windows 8, Microsoft changed some things. But there's this "every two" rule with Microsoft Windows: every other release will be OK.

At least, that's what I've read. And experience wise, this seems true. My old Dell runs Windows 8.

Have you made a decision yet, silvergator?
