I see that rather than offer XP Pro pre-installed on the D630, Dell Canada now offers "Genuine Windows Vista ® Business to XP Pro Downgrade Rights".

What exactly does than mean? How are the "downgrade" XP disks different from a retail copy of XP?

Do I get the Vista disks if I want to go back?

Dell will preinstall Windows XP Professional (exercising your "downgrade rights") but provide you with both the Windows Vista DVD and Windows XP CD. Also, they will provide support for both Windows XP and Vista. The disks are full versions, just like a regular Dell OS disk.

Thanks much. I thought that perhaps Dell shipped the machines with Vista and included XP disks for the customer to install.

But I guess in a few weeks they won't be having anything to do with XP, no?

After June 18th, you'll only be able to order certain Dell computers with XP through "downgrade rights." Only certain systems will offer XP-Latitudes, Optiplexes, (SP) Vostro, and (I think) some XPS systems. Before June 18, XP will be available on mainstream consumer Inspiron systems.
