I just ordered a Dell 1420. I went cheap and opted for basic 1 yr mail in warrantee. Now I am thinking that this may be a bad choice. Should I opt to put in another $200 for a 2 year at home warranty and parts??
I've never owned a Dell or a laptop so I do not know how fragile these things are.

I always get the max warrenty especially for electronics and suggest that others do the same. Thats just me tho.

I would never get warranty on new desktops and laptops. Not worth the extra $200. The first thing that usually breaks on a laptop is the harddrive which can be replaced for $70 on newegg and it RARELY breaks. So no, the warranty isn't worth it unless you abuse your notebook by dropping it constantly.

I never get the extended warranty on ANYTHING except.... my laptop.
Every time the hinges would go out on my C400 laptop, Dell would send me a whole new screen. I probably got 8 new screens over the coarse of five years. -
The warranty is definitely worth it. Also it's considerably easier to sell your laptop when the warranty is still in effect.

I got the Dell "CompleteCare" on my notebook and didn't need it. Yes, the hard drive is the first thing that usually goes and for that you can get a usb or NAS drive for about the same money. Since it's a laptop, I would still recommend getting the warranty. It costs more in the long run, but if it gets damaged and you don't have the insurance you will be sorry. Even if you do have the insurance and you haven't backed up the hard drive you will be sorry. Backup and extended warranty are both good investments for a notebook. On my Macbook, I still haven't paid for the AppleCare, but I have a year to come up with the extra $250 that extends the warranty and tech support to 3 years. I plan to do it before the deadline but just not right away.

Dell covers accidental damage, its worth it, IMO. Go and get it, $200 is really small when you compare how much you would spend, in case you drop your laptop and is broken into pieces.

I never take the extended warranty, usually if something goes wrong, it's during the first month... that's my personal experience...

$200 for 2 years amounts to pennies a day for a little extra piece of mind. If you can afford it, I say go for the warranty.

I am one of the one's on the "don't pay for it" side myself. I have paid for extended warranties before on electronics and it never paid for itself. I have had 4 laptops and 3 decktops in the past 6 years and none have needed anything after the initial warranty. IMO, paying a 10-20% premium on top of the price is sort of crazy.
Why do you think they offer it to begin with - because they make money on it! -
I got a 3 yr and 3 yr accidental damage warranty. This thing costs too much to let it waste after a year when the warranty runs out.

took out 4 years warrenty on an outlet 1530.
Main reason, I had already placed an order at £770 with lesser spec and only 1 year which got weirdly cancelled.
Then from outlet I got a higher spec laptop (1680 screen from 1280, and wireless N) and 4 years Next Day On Site warrenty, for £800 (£30 more).. well worth it -
I'd highly recommend extended warranty on dell laptops. Dell definetly isn't known for their tough and durable product.
You're almost guaranteed something will fail outside the 1 year warranty period. -

alex - Not sure I completely understand. Six months is covered in the standard warranty - are you saying you got more within the standard year warranty (not taking into account in-home vs mail-in) b/c you paid for an extended warranty? So in essence, you got what you REALLY paid for since you spent so much on that warranty. Right?
Not disputing that a warranty can be beneficial, it is just as individual decision whether you want to spend for it. -
I don't think extended warranties are worth it. Most failures occur within the first year. After that, your laptop has depreciated so much that the $150+ extended warranty is worth a significant portion of what the laptop is worth. Might as well get a new one at that point.

another thing I forgot to mention - I but with AMEX and they automatically extend whatever warranty you get. Cases a little more paperwork, but it is there if you need it!

I wouldn't risk my investment if I intend to keep my baby for as long as the warranty goes. -

I never take extended warranty on laptop sepending 200-300.. its really not worth it.. coz you anyways have one year base warranty.. and I think if a laptop functions reasonably well for one year it will continue to do so for another two more years.. unless of course you dont become extremely brutal at handling it..
I believe if this is something you spent a lot of money on.. take a little care of it.. and it will be just fine... In any case... the laptop u purchase today will be much much cheaper in 2 years than it is today.. and the extra 200 you pay is a money gone...... with no interest....... so my simple maths tell me its not worth it.... -
To each his own, but I usually get warranty on laptops, I just ordered my XPS M1730 and got the 4 year accidental coverage with lo-jack as I don't want to take chances on a 4k laptop.

Have to say, the warranty was the hardest decision to make on the purchase last night! And I'll admit that I did not even follow my own advice. I bought 2yrs (no accidential though) as it was only about $5/mo and I figure I'll be shopping for a new one by then anyway!

I got the 3 year Next Business Day on Site warranty. A no brainer, I need my system it was like $150 more. I do not buy extended warranty for any other electronics. My Amex extends warranties by 1 year So the my M1530 has a 4 year warranty on it.
