Is it really that difficult? Someone in India said it wasn't possible.

I ordered an e1705 last night with 1GB of RAM. This morning I called to request that it be put into 1 DIMM and I am told that is not possible, then I am told it would cost me $175.

Has anyone requested this? Do you know any alternative routes to take?

The reason for the change----I don't want to have to buy 2GB of RAM from Newegg when Ive already paid for 1GB.

    Comments, Suggestions? TIA.

Why not? Just get the 512MB RAM option. Its probably going to be 2x 256 cards... so you can just toss / sell them.

Getting 1GB from newegg is only like $80. You would save $95 by doing that.

Heheh... no not at all. In fact its the most easy upgrade there is.

All you have to do open a door on the bottom of the notebook, and put the cards into their slots. It's idiot proof.

    Thanks for your help!

    A few more questions.......

Where can I find what RAM is compatible with the e1705?
Is one brand better than another?
What is best choice in regards to performance?

    TIA.

The E1705 takes DDR2 533 PC 4200 or DDR2 667 PC 5300. 667 is obviously faster than the 533. I haven't seen real world tests, but I think it's not worth getting it considering the huge price difference. Unless you want to have the latest and greatest.

I picked up to two 533 1GB sticks from newegg for a total of about 160. Way cheaper than the Dell solution.

I've heard a lot of people recommending Crucial, they are a tad bit expensive, but I think you're almost always going to get a good chip. Whereas with others, sometimes it's a mixed bag. Mine are by a company named G.Skill. Not bad for the price, had it in mine for a week now, so far so good.

    Thanks for the info!

Sounds I will call dell now and drop the RAM upgrade and buy two sticks on Newegg.

And also, as a response to your initial question... I think the initial configuration was 2 DIMMs of 512. To move from 2 DIMMs of 512 to one 1 GB DIMM would naturally cost more money... But I'm glad you asked the question and landed with the better solution :D

Yes the exact same thing happened to me. I ordered the 1GB of ram for 1 dimm (so I could upgrade to 2GB later) and was told it was not posssible. The motherboard wont support it or something. So I just upped it to 2x1024MB ram. :D
But I understand how it can be fustrating to have to sell your two sticks of 512MB ram in order to upgrade to 2GB.
