Ive been 'playing' with my HDD all day, trying to dualboot Vista and set up acronis etc.
I have wiped all the partitions and started over, but its obvious Mediadirect is still on MBR, the splashscreen still comes up when the button is press
What I would like to know, is if I wipe the MBR, will this disable the MD button? What can I do it put it out of action (without breaking the laptop)

If you whipe the partitions n the drive you'll whipe Media Direct.
You still get the Media Direct logo and all that jazz when you hit the button because Dell put a second BIOS in the computer. That BIOS is designed to load up and boot Media Direct properly all the time. As a result, you can't remove that without potentially breaking the laptop (as you'd probably either have to physically remove a second BIOS chip or dump, modify, and flash back a modded BIOS without it)... The benefits are not worth it... -
