You need to get a TV Tuner in order to connect a coaxial cable and get cable TV. There are USB and PCMCIA flavors available. They usually come with everything you need to get started, and range from $30-120.

Meant to say i bought a Hauppauge tv tuner USB yesterday but it wouldnt pick up any chanels but i put the tv coaxial cable into it and got all the channels, so im guessing the hauppauge aeriel was just rubbish, any idea if i can get a USB one with a better aeriel?

I don't know the situation in Scotland, but in many regions, over-the-air TV (aka, rabbit ears, aerial, etc) is being phased out. This is obviously a cable company ploy to make money. It might be that you don't have any OTA broadcasts in your location.

We have freeview here, Its just the really crap aeriel that Hauppauge decided to give me is why it didnt work, is there any better aeriels i can get, it works outside the house but not inside. how would i get TV inside without running a wire from the aeriel in the loft into my room then connecting to the Laptop?

You might try to get a very retro pair of rabbit ears that connect to a coaxial connector. You will not find this in stores anymore.

You will still be able to receive over-the-air TV as you call it through your aerial with Freeview. You can also get Broadband TV in some areas and of course Sky, so its not just cable companies.
