For some reason Dell doesn't offer a 7200rpm hard drive as an option on the Inspiron 1720 (or the Vostro 1700). Is it possible to order a 7200rpm hard drive separately from the laptop and install it yourself or are the hard drives proprietary?

A HD change won't void your Dell warranty either :D

Though I wouldn't send it in with my machine as they might swap it out for the part your machine originally came with :O

Thats weird. Maybe its only temporary. Dell australia upgrades to the 160GB 7200RPM Seagate for only $160AUD, which is cheaper than buying one yourself and selling the old one.

Thanks. That one seems to have exceptional ratings too.
My main concern with looking for a drive on Newegg was whether it would fit the Inspiron -- or whether the screw holes would be in the wrong place or something.

Yes it is weird. I was wondering if it had something to do with the 1720 and 1700 models being able to take two hard drives, and Dell was trying to keep the heat down. Or maybe they're just trying to push the sale of the 5400rpm drives on the 17" laptops by not offering an alternative.

Any 2.5" SATA drive will fit. It's a standard form factor.
