I am getting a Dell Vostro 1400 with a Celeron processor. I am planning to take out the Celeron and add an Intel Core/Core 2 CPU. Will my Windows XP Home COD still work from changing the CPU? Also which CPU will use the lowest amount of power?

    Intel Core Solo
    Intel Core Duo
    Intel Core 2 Duo

I don't care about performance since all I plan to run is Internet Explorer and Microsoft Word/Excel. I was thinking the Intel Core Solo will be the lowest, can someone confirm this.

I feel like this question should be asked...

If you are just using the laptop for Word/Excel/Internet and speed isn't a concern, why not just keep the Celeron chip?

Celeron runs too hot and getting a lot less battery life.

Might it be a better idea to just to get a better processor at purchase? Does replacing the CPU void the warranty?

Replacing your CPU will void the warranty.

The new Celeron's are made on the Core 2 architecture. It's basically a single core Core 2 Duo.

Intel Core Solo was not offered. I don't care much about warranty.

The celeron probably will be plenty fast for you.

Current Celerons are Core 2 chips. You're thinking of when Core Solo and Core Duo were out.
