I've heard some people say that If you call the Dell Customer Service when you buy your laptop you can get it for cheaper/with more discounts? I've read some reviews about Dell products where the buyesr called before purchasing their laptop and got their price lowered. Can we really do this and if we can, how would I suceed in getting the discount on the Inspiron 6400 I'm planning to buy really soon ?

I have seen very little price decreases and very little price increases, to my belief I think they do exactly what we do, they run through the web site and it comes up with a number, however it is always nice to talk to Hunjabi in Dehli, India

Yes, they have more options over the phone than we see on the web site. I ordered my 1505 on Friday, when the web site wasn’t allowing the T2500 option. The sales girl was able to add it to my order. She also got me free ground shipping to Hawaii, when the web site forced me into next day shipping. So I saved almost $80 from the online price.
So obviously it depends on what you want, but yes, they have more options which MAY result in savings to you, as it did for me. -
This is the experience I've had with Dell Customer Service.
I ordered a XPS M1710 with the following specs from DELL.CA (CANADA not US! be aware)
t2400, 60gb 7200rpm, 1gb ram, 7900gtx, black, wuxga, 3 year complete care / next business day warranty. Online it retailed 2968$. There are dell.ca coupons (only a 100$ off one) but the way the coupons work is that you hav eto go to a specific lineup of dell laptops, all which are upp'd in price anyways (however, they have higher specs) so the 100$ coupon really means nothing online. I called in the order with dell customer service and they let me use the 100$ off coupon even though it was not applicable with my order online, so that was sweet.
Then, I figured I paid way too much (with tax and the 100$ off coupon it was 2868$ + 430$ tax), 3300$ CAD. I called them up a few days ago and told them I wanted to cancel. They freaked out. They offered me a 300$ discount off my price and I said no, I still want to cancel.
I was talking to my friend on the phone a few minutes later and I received a call on the other line, it was Dell. They went so far to talk to the credit department and offered me a 400$ discount. At this point, I was happy with my bargaining. Now my laptop is only 2468$ cad + tax - 2800~. A lot cheaper than 3300, huh?.
Moral of the story: The phone is a lot more powerful in terms of bargaining power. You won't get any deals online compared to the ones you can get on the phone when you're buying expensive stuff (cheaper laptops that are around 1500~ will be more difficult to bargain). A little bit of persistance goes a long way to save a few hundred here or there.

I forgot: If you find you can't get the options you want online, then CALL DELL. If you don't see a 60gb 7200rpm drive avaliable for the 6400/e1505, but you really want it, or 1gb 667 mhz ram, or a slower processer, etc, just CALL IN YOUR ORDER. They have the power to customize your order a lot more than you can online. Do you think they honestly care if you get a certain harddrive that isn't offered online? As long as they get their commission, and you're happy, then in the long run selling you something that you 'shouldn't' get online is no big deal. I just hate seeing people saying 'wtf X component isn't offered with Y laptop online!!!' when in reality you can just call in the order and most likely get that component very easily. -
I bought a Precision M90 last week (should be here today!). I found a deal online through an edcuation reseller that had a decent config for below $2000, which, while it doesn't have the better GPU, will hold me over for quite a while. Anyways, I called Dell to see if they would match the price cause I felt better buying it directly from them and having them get all the money rather than a reseller. First the sales rep told me it was approved after some work, but the next day I got an email saying that it hadn't been approved and was instead offering me an i9400 (E1705) for the same price, with a few better specs and a much better warranty. However, as an engineering student (and after hearing all the stories of problems with i9400s) I decided I didn't want the deal. So when Dell called back, I told him that I wanted the orginal deal or no go. I would move on and get something else that would be cheaper anyway. I then proceeded to unload some tech jargon (helps if you know some) of the difference between the M90 and i9400, and told him that as an engineering student, I wanted the M90. I reaffirmed that it was either the M90 or nothing. Two hours later he called back and said that the deal had gone through. I'm expecting my M90 today or tomorrow. Telling them that you'll go somewhere else can be a big bargaining tool, though I have to admit that you're probably more likely to get deals like this through Small Business or XPS, since the Inspiron Customer Service is outsourced to India, while Small Business and XPS is US-maintained at the headquarters. But don't hold me to that; I've never dealt with Inspiron Customer Service.

Hello, I am new to this forum. I just recently bought a Dell M1710, and this is what happened when I called Customer Service.
First I applied for the Dell Credit and got approved for $4,000. Then I configured my new laptop. The total came in about $320 more than I had been approved for. I called the Customer Service to see if I could get the difference or a different amount put on another card. The rep told me that they could not do that. The customer rep seemed very very interested in getting me to buy that day. After looking at my cart she then tried to get me to lower my price by not getting the equipment I wanted. I just would not budge, if I was going to spend that much I wanted it just like I config showed. So I decided to buy it with my debt card when she said that she would go and talk to her manager and see if he could help. About ten minutes later I had the laptop just the way I wanted it configured with $87.52 left on my perferred account(it worked out for me). So that was about $400 off the online price. I also got next day shipping at no charge. When it arrived (last wednesday) it was exactly like I wanted (maxed out). So, yes you can get a cheaper price, but it is how you go about it. When I called I was not looking a getting a cheaper price, but it worked out for me. Also, I got them not to put the bloat ware on the system.
