I bought refurbished Latitude XT from eBay, which burned out for some unknown reason after a day of using. (It seems power management circuit that burned out. Smoked. Still worked for a while, now doesn't power up at all)
I contacted DELL first instead of the seller. DELL's technical support ref. said he will get me a complete new Latitude XT.
I checked order status of the new Latitude XT I'm supposed to get and it was then I realized the replacement laptop comes with 64 GB SDD. The Latitude XT I bought from eBay had 60GB 4200 RPM HDD. It was too good to be true. So, I took a close look at the original configuration of Latitude XT I bought. The original configuration actually contained 64 GB SSD. Apparently, the seller (or the seller who sold it to eBay seller) took out 64GB SSD and downgraded it to 60GB HDD.
I'm getting new replacement laptop soon, and what should I do in this case?
Will I have to put 64 GB SSD from the new laptop to broken laptop ?
Will I be able to just send back broken laptop with 60 GB HDD and able to keep 64 GB SSD?
Has anyone gotten a new laptop under warranty and sent back damaged laptop with downgraded or missing part from the original configuration ?
If you did, were you charged back for the difference? or did they just accept it as is?
I believe I have option of keeping the old HDD if I buy "Keep your hard drive" warranty option from dell, but I could not find information on how much it will cost or how to buy.
Anyone know how much it costs and how to buy?
(I chat with tech ref about it, but he wasn't able to answer that question. Told me to call DELL customer care, but they were closed for the weekend. )

I would ask Dell about this, but when Dell does not receive an entire order back they tend to get cranky.
-
Well, of course DELL will say they must have everything the way it was.
They might even cancel the warranty if I was to told them HDD was changed.
I'm hoping that they might not notice that HDD was changed when they receive the laptop since it is an internal part. Would they actually take the laptop a part to compare parts with the original configuration? -
The exchange order/warranty will not get cancelled. The agent may ask you to send back the SSD in place of the regular hard drive.
I agree with Greg. Email/call your support person and ask for advice on the situation. Ultimately, it is what they say and then put in the ticket notes that matters.
Keep Your Hard Drive (KYHD) is only for drives that fail under nomal use.
KYHD warranty information here: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/services/prosupport/hard_drive?c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz -
You should be fine. I would not mention anything.
I have gotten exchanges before and forgot to return a battery before and a charger before. They never noticed the difference.
As far as I understand it (from contacts inside) basically all they do is check that they have all parts needed to run the system and that the asset tag on the system matches what it is supposed to be (so that it is the correct service tag) -
Contacted DELL, and I was told that I will be billed for the HDD if I don't return the original HDD.
Technically I knew that will be how it will be done, but if DELL will not notice it as paladin732 have experienced, I could keep 64GB SSD instead of 60GB.
Do you think they will allow me to return the SSD later if they bill me ? -
-
It's good you noticed this now before Dell asked for their hard drive back. Kind of sucks the seller took such a nice SSD before selling it though.
-
keep the laptop they send you as is and send the other one back as it is
you should be fine.....
if they say something about the hdd...weeks later and i doubt it.....then send it to them and get yourself a 320gig 5400rpm -
actually get a 7200rpm
bwahahahaaa -
Your biggest mistake is ringing them and telling them. You should have returned the laptop and played dumb
When I returned an M1330 I took the power cord, Cd's , case and battery
Admittedly I didn't swap a HD but as long as its functioning and you say nothing then they probably wouldn't care, assuming your also ignorant if they ring you.
It might seem a bit wrong, but it's not your fault about the ebay seller. -
Thanks for the info. though.
I will be returning the laptop as is and keep D-bay, CDs (they didn't send me OS CD in the replacement anyway.), stylus.
I will not be keeping power adapter and battery since they might as well be what cause problem in the first place.
The replacement laptop I have received, which is supposedly newally built from DELL factory had dents on the case. It was definitely not shipping damage since the box was clean. It is either they had bad parts to began with, or was handled roughly in the factory during build or packing.
Also for some weird reason, they put Windows Vista Basic label on the laptop, while it was shipped with Windows Vista Business (and it is the only option other than windows XP).
May be the factory workers didn't know the difference ? -
ahhh my bad on the hdd

Guys, seriously...you think Dell is going to not notice a $600-800 drive missing?
Keep it honest... -
^^ LOL good point
Purdue ? ...... lemme guess....pre-law

Alright, I've had to delete enough comments in this thread. Closed, sorry OP.
