The graininess of the screen is beginning to grow on me and am considering having it replaced. Who do I call? How easy is it? How fast is the repair service and how good are the techs generally at it? Anything to think about before going through with this?

You can just use chat to talk with technical support and they'll get you setup there. It doesn't take long, either.

Word of warning: I got a replacement sent for my 1330 a few days ago. The XPS tech assured me several times that the replacement screen would be the same make as the one the laptop originally came with (Toshiba). Well guess what? The replacement was a ChiMei screen and it was far worse than the original. :)

A Customer Service tech unfortunately cannot request a specific type of LCD screen when processing a system exchange. They can assure that you will get the same specs of LCD (i.e. LED backlit WXGA), but that's all. The only ones who can "guarantee" a specific screen manufacturer are tech support agents when processing an LCD replacement. This is because they have the Dell alphanumeric part number for the various manufacturers, and they can just use that. Again, as many have said here before, the type of screen you get really depends on the supply/stock available on the particular day your dispatch/order was processed.

    Good Luck!

I didn't ask him for a specific part, he went out of his way to tell me that I'd get a Toshiba because of the part #. That's the only reason I asked for a screen to be sent out rather than asking for a replacement laptop.

EDIT: direct quote from the agent:

Agent (removed the guy's name): "Well the main reason I would go with a replacement system over parts, is that if I send out a replacement screen it will be the same make/model. As such there is still a chance the problem will return."

I then repeated my question and he confirmed that I'd be getting a Toshiba screen as a replacement.

I'm actually not sure if what I am seeing is the grain or just the HD resolution pattern.........it isn't really bothersome and my dad didn't even notice.

If it looks like greasy fingerprints/vaseline smeared on the screen then it's the sparkle problem that I've had with both screens. The ChiMei has that + a screendoor problem with horizontal lines.

Ya it looks like finger grease on the screen but it doesn't affect the picture unless I look for it. I adjusted some gamma and color brightness options.

HD resolution pattern? I have no idea what you might be referring to. When I watch HD movies, all I see is an incredibly clear image, no pattern of any sort.
