I just ordered a M170. When going through the process of buying a gaming laptop I wanted power and mobility. Thus, the 7800 GTX with the Pentium M struck me as a good compromise. I also chose Dell because I work for a Dell partner and get a 15% discount.
However, when I was speaking to Dell they said I could get the deal of the week. The stated quote, and subsequent invoice, has 'Go 7800 Ultra' on it.
I went through a process of trying to find out more about this so-called 'Ultra' card. I specifically asked if this was a typo. When told no, I stated that should I get a 6800 ultra I will be returning the laptop immediately.
What I am looking for are any insights on this card. I ordered the laptop on March 9th. With the timing of releases around the 7900, and the 7800 OC card it is conceivable NVidia may have finally decided to release a Go ultra version of the 7800 to a major OEM like Dell. However, neither the Dell rep, nor I, can seem to locate any specs (such as clock speeds) on this ultra variant.

As far as I am aware, there is no "7800 Go Ultra" GPU - the only ultra GPU released by Nvidia for notebooks in the recent year was the 6800 Go Ultra.
-
There are 2 likely outcomes on this:
1. They sold me a 6800 ultra on a typo - fortunately I can return
2. They are selling me a 7800 GTX with a typo. At least I still get a spiffy card.
However, I thought I would check anyway... -
Well on the invoice, the card should be shown on it. The 6800go that I have is the nv42 board. That is how Dell sees the card. If you could find that, post it and see if anybody can match it to the 6800ultra or 7800gtx.
Edit: I found that the 6800ultra is called nv42-u or nv42u. If that is what is on the invoice, you are getting the 6800 ultra. -
Well, the invoice with all the part numbers will come with computer. ETA is March 27 I think.
Thanx for the tip. I will be looking very carefully at everything when I get it.
I made a big deal about wanting the 7800 GTX version. I can't for the life of me believe they will send me the 6800 ultra. But if they do, it goes straight back. -
Can't you look at the invoice on dell.com. I would look for it.
-
I will have to wait until arrival to see the printed invoice. -
Yes I got the exact same invoice. It was quoted as a Go 7800 Ultra. But its just the normal one. 250MHz Core clock with the 8 pixel shaders disabled. Dell just wanted it to sould more impressive. Even though the Ultra is still well behind the GTX in terms of performance.
But bear in mind that the Dell 7800 "Ultra" can overclock very well. I run mine at 370MHz core and 930MHz memory. With a score of 5850 in 3dMark05 -

You are correct -
Have a look here:
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/inspn_9400?c=ie&cs=iedhs1&l=en&s=dhs
It is quoted as a Nvidia Go 7800 Ultra. I dont know why they are calling it that. -
The ultra is the GTX. My friend's sales rep at Dell confirmed this. Said it was most likely just a lack of attention to detail (just changed the 6800 to 7800 and figured their work was done)
-
No, it's the regular 7800go. The GTX isn't available for the 9400. You'll notice when you go to "Customize" that it says the 7800go.
-
I should have clarified which one I was referring to. The M170 (which the OP was talking about) when ordered online via Dell with the 7800gtx will show up as 7800 "ultra" when checking out. The link posted for the 9400 is something else altogether.

If you ordered the M170 and it says the 7800 Ultra, it's referring to the GTX card. I just ordered mine and am looking at the invoice listed on the site:
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 Ultra,for XPS M170
They don't sell the regular 7800Go for the XPS, at least not in the US.
Go 7800 'Ultra'?
