    Hi All,

The i1520 has been treating me well and now I need to order an XPS M1330 for my sister who starts college in the fall. I called up my EPP sales rep with her member school purchase ID but there were no big discounts to be had. Basically - I was given the following config and price after some negotiating. Compared to my i1520, it seems like terrible value (But I guess thats the premium you pay for form factor). She is going to use the computer for school work / internet / email / music and movies.

Anyway - Is this a good deal and should I get the LED vs. LCD. My target price is around $1700. I am at $1860 with LCD right now.

    C2D 2.0Ghz
    2GB Ram
    LCD with 2.0MP
    8400M GS
    120GB HD
4 year CC and premium warranty
    No FP reader

Is there a way to get a better deal minus the shady Drake scams.

there is a $100 off coupon on the dellunleashed site. After you sign up, if you go to the My Gift Registry and then Manage Accounts or vice versa, can't remember, the coupon is at the top right hand corner. It will be emailed to the edu address you provided. I would suggest the LED screen as well if it can find a way into your budget

It isn't a terrible value compared to your 1520 - with the 1330 you're paying for the thin screen and the flashy looks.

@HCW and Peter740 - In my opinion and my opinion alone, If someone did not attend Drake or did not have an intention of attending Drake, they should not have purchased the laptop through the school's EPP site. If they did, according to me and me alone they scammed the system.

I have no reason to be jealous - I could have very well jumped on that bandwagon but I chose to go through my school's website and got a very fair deal on my Inspiron 1520. And I never wanted the 1330 so the Drake deal was a moot point. End of discussion.

@ terrywd - In order to get the most comprehensive warranty the preselected bundle gives you 2GB as the minimum so I can't do the newegg thing(Though I did do that with my 1520)

@ Chikachic817 - We signed up on Dell Unleased using her school email that she recentely recv'd but we never got the $100 email as Dell Unleased does not have a tie up with them (Damn Ivy's!). I got a $200 one when I did my 1520 though.

@meh_cd - I agee with you that you are paying a premium for the form factor but from a componenet point of view it really isnt good value like the 1420.

So does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get the price down. Or should I go ahead and pull the trigger.

P.S. I wish there was some way to get rid of the Timbuk2 bag and save $140.

I don't see anything wrong with paying a little more for a bit of flash.

@HT2 - Thanks for the suggestion - I would love to get the Asus but they do not offer complete care / Accidental Damage like Dell / HP etc. I am a firm beleiver that CC is very important for college dorms. 1420 might be little to bulky for her to carry around campus. Worst case scenario, I may order a latitude instead.

@Trickzee - Thanks for defending me but its okay. You see, Peter is right - I am insanely jealous of not getting the deal I wanted for a laptop that I did not want from the deal that was structured for a school that I did not attend. And while we are on the subject of jealousy - I would like the entire NBR community to know that I am soooooooo jealous of David Hasselhoff's hair and I constantly wish that I sported his ill mullet. But obsessing about it is not going to get me far in life - I need therapy. Maybe Peter can help me since he can diagnose pangs of envy so well.

Ack! I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. I think it looks awesome, but it doesn't have the gpu I want, so it is an easy pass for me.

And vcash - you are right. The 1420 is a better value. Perhaps you can convince your sister to switch?

You know, if she's not going to do gaming or anything graphically intensive, just don't get the 8400m gs. Cheaper and more battery life that way

OMG-That picture made my night ! 1st, you sound like an awesome big bro ! 2nd, for that kind of dough, why not get her a Sexy Sony Vaio from CC or BB? Their 14" lappys are lighter and sweet-looking - I *think CR120 model* was the one I saw at BB

If she is not going to be doing any serious gaming, then you should just get the X3100. It will run Aero just fine and also 2D graphics programs such as photoshop. Save that 100 bux and but the LED display. Also, you might want to call both Dell Home and SB a few more times and see if you get a rep who is willing to deal. Be warned, it might take a while.
