I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and want to add more RAM increase performance. I saw the guide on here showing how to install more so I don't think that part will be a problem, however, I did have a few questions.

I did a search on the dell site and it says I have 2 options:

    1GB DDR2 400MHz non-ECC Module for select Dell systems

    and

    512MB DDR2 400MHz non-ECC Module for select Dell systems

Right now I have 1 stick of RAM (512). My question is, what options do I have? Can I buy a 1GB, stick that in, then basically have 1.5gigs or buy 2 1GB, replace the old one, and have a total of 2gigs of RAM? It would be my first time opening up a computer of any kind, so thanks to whoever made that guide. I'm just a little confused at this point so I wanted some answers. Thanks to anyone that replies. If you need any more info from me, I'll reply back ASAP.

It's pretty simple. Your Dell will have two slots for Ram. Currently you are using up one of the two slots with your 512MB.

If you buy another 1GB stick, you will have 1.5 GB. If you buy 2 x 1GB sticks, you will have to replace the 512MB stick, and end up with 2 GB ram.

I believe at least 1 GB is recommended if you use Vista, but personally I'd go with two. It's easy to upgrade and not that expensive.

Ok, I figured it was something like that, just wasn't sure if you could mix. I think I'm just going to get a 1gb stick of RAM. Thanks for the response, I'm gonna go ahead and order it now. Thanks =)
