Yup, I figured that I might as well stop wondering and just find out once and for all if the 9300 is right for me. I used the latest 40% off coupon and paid $1578 shipped for the following configuration:

    Pentium® M Processor 760 (2 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
    Microsoft Windows XP Home
17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife™
    256MB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz 1 Dimm
    256MB NVIDA® GeForce™ Go 6800
    80GB Hard Drive
    8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer write capability
Intel® PRO 2200 and Dell 350 Bluetooth Internal Wireless Cards
    FREE Dell 720 printer

I've got 2GB of Kingston PC4200/533MHz RAM and XP Pro that I'll install once I get the notebook. If I'm not pleased with the 9300, I'll return it and get an Asus Z70va. We shall see...

That's a great coupon to use on the 9300, let us know how it goes, I'm sure many would be interested to know who wins the Asus v. Dell battle here.

    Will do!

I wish Dell would release a 40% off coupon for the Small Business division, 'cuz I really wanted to try the M70 mobile workstation. I prefer the smaller size of the M70, but it's just too expensive as listed.

HA!! I figured that I'd be hearing from you, Luck! With a price like that, it's just crazy not to at least try out the 9300. The big factors for me will be how difficult it'll be lugging it to/from work every day and the quality of the screen. I'll let'cha know!

Your right luck, there could be chance that there will be a light leak, and the glare could get annoying but it would be clearer :dell:

Font size on UXGA is extremely small for me and many others. Dell uses 120 dpi to enlarge it which will screw up some apps. You really want to run at normal dpi which is 96. IMO, love the glossy screen accept for the extremely small fonts. I had to return it and ordered a new one with WXGA. Now it is perfect.

Light leakage may be heavy when you get your 9300 but after a few weeks this leakage will dissipate and look ALOT better ,mine is almost completely gone now after four weeks. Samsung screen looks great!!

My new 9300 arrived on Friday (8/19)... and it's going back on Monday (8/21)! It's B-I-G!! Too big for my tastes. I'm gonna be travelling with my notebook A LOT over the next two years (got a job that's sending me to Costa Rica, China and then Singapore over the next 8-9 months, then 6 months in Miami; several countries in C. and S. America after that). I need something that's powerful, yet much easier to carry than the 9300.

I played a few games on the 9300, just to give it a try. Doom 3, HL2, Riddick and Far Cry all looked great with D3 being the best due to the Nvidia 6800. I don't think any game looked/performed any better than on my Hornet Pro (specs in sig, below), however. The 9300's 17" WUXGA Tru-Life screen is fine. The gloss doesn't bother me... at least while indoors. I do see what are often referred to as "sparkles." It's hard to describe these sparkles, but I know I'd grow annoyed with this screen over time.

So, no 9300 for me. I'm glad I tried it just so I now know it's not what I want/need for a notebook. My attention will turn towards the Asus Z70va and the HP nw8240. I saw that HP at a conference, last week. It's very nice, looking a bit like a Thinkpad, but sleeker (1" thick), lighter (5.8 lbs.) and more powerful (1.86 PM 750, 128MB ATI Mobility Fire GL V5000 PCIe, 15.4" WSXGA+, and 3-year ONSITE warranty). I'll end up choosing one of these two notebooks and then it's time to book my flights!!

Luck beat me to it. No restocking fee and 21 days to return the 9300. Dell will send UPS to pick up the notebook at my door, so all is good.

Yeah, I'm definitely glad I tried the 9300, Luck. It's a nice notebook, but not for me. I just ordered the HP nw8240. It oughtta be delivered by mid-week. If I like it as much as the one I saw on Wednesday, I'll keep it and pass on the Z70va.

That's a generous return policy, which is good! The 9300 is big and I certainly wouldn't want to lug it on planes and all over the world, but the price to features ratio really is good for the 9300. A thin and light notebook should certainly suit you much better so hopefully the HP nw8240 works out for you. Let us know!
