I'm living in Japan and was looking at various configs of XPS M1710's and 1705's (9400) on both the Dell US and Japan sites. Most computer products are more expensive in Japan, for example a similarly configured 6400 or 9400 usually costs about 15-30% more from Dell Japan than Dell US. However they seem to have some incredible deals on the XPS models. In fact I was able to configure a M1710 with much better specs than the more expensive 9400 or even 6400 packages.

For example, from the Japan store:
    XPS M1710 Core2Duo 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM (667), 7900GS, 160GB HD, Truelife WUXGA, Vista Home Premium, 3945ABG+Bluetooth, no software bundle, 3-year int'l warranty + 3-year complete care (incl. theft insurance): 259,220yen (approx. $2160)

Even using the Premium Care discount (with the same 3-yr warranty options as above) and coupons, the total from Dell US came to $2889, or about 33% more!

If I upgrade to a C2D 2.16GHz, 7950GTX and Vista Ultimate, the price is 333,770yen (approx $2780) in Japan, compared to $3581 from Dell US.

I was planning on waiting for the next version with Santa Rosa and DX10 graphics, but this deal from Dell Japan really seems too good to be true and I'm worried I might miss out if I wait. What do you guys think?

    Thanks!

P.S. Edit: I just noticed that the Dell Japan price includes sales tax and shipping while the US price does not, so the deal is even more amazing! :)

Yes, Sometimes DELL Japan has good deals. I’m also in Japan wanting to buy a XPS M1210. Waiting for them to give better discounts than their current 6~8% coupons.

One thing to keep in mind when ordering from DELL Japan is that they only install Japanese Windows. Luckily my Windows XP home edition key worked with English edition, not so sure whether it applies to Vista or not.

If you are looking for a 17" High end gaming machine in Japan then you might want to take a look at the Lesance CL706GW-C2D-GT based on Clevo M570U (AKA Sager 5720 / Rock Xtreme CTX) by Pc-koubou. Here is a review

I will be moving to Japan at the end of the month and many people suggested that I buy a notebook there.

But in the end I purchased a 9400 (e1705) in Canada for about $1850 (including taxes and discounts). I probably added more junk that I should have (a bag, bluetooth keyboard, mouse (<- i only use the mouse, I still prefer my logitech keyboard), draft n card (<- i have it disabled because it's not compatible with my router), etc).

It would be nice to practice my Japanese on a japanese keyboard and OS but I wanted windows XP (at least until Vista matures) and I needed a DVD burner to burn a lot of stuff so I just splurged and bought it before I left. :)

I configued a 9400 on the Japan Dell website and it turned out quite a bit more than the price I can get from Canada, but I wasn't aware of the discounts in Japan.

The main advantage I believe, if I purchased it in Japan, was my basic 1 year return to depot warranty would work in Japan whereas right now, if I bring my notebook to Japan, I'd have to either upgrade my warranty or ship it back to Canada for repair, etc.
