Well I ordered a Inspiron 6000 yesterday, with 1.6 ghz processor, 1 gb ram, 60 gig hd, 3 yr warranty, standard lcd (the screen doesnt matter that much to me, + makes it too small imo) and standard battery. However today I noticed that you can change the processor speed and you dont have to take the 3 year warranty if you chose the $1400 model of the 6000. So I called up dell and asked them if i could change up my order. I upped my 1.6 to a 1.86 and got the dedicated 64 mb video card and 1 year warranty.
Good move or bad move?
Total before : $1,183 total now: 1,286

You didnt read my post did you.

you should get the 1.6 ghz, 256 mb ram, 128 mb ati x300, 60 gig hard drive, dvd burner, 9 cell standard battery/primary, and no extended warranty unless you think you are goign to break your laptop.
this all with the $750 coupon would cost you about $1200 then buy 2 gigs of ram outside from like an internet store cause it will cost $220 total. Cheaper then the $250 for 1 gig ram upgrade from dell
Atleast that's what I would have done...
Back when I got my computer you had to go over $1899 for 35%... my total setup cost I think $1564 because since I was in Alaska I didn't get the free shipping.
Also you might want to consider upgrading the monitor to the 1900x1200 resolution I think.. I'm perfectly satisfied with 1280x800... but some people want the higher resolution

Hey man, I just bought an Inspiron 6000 today... I upped my processor as well. I was told that upping it won't make too much of a difference but I'm just happy to have purchased a laptop after having my old laptop of 6 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got:
1.86 GHz pentium 4m
512MB RAM
128 ATI X300
60GB HDD
WUXGA 15.4" screen
I don't think you made a bad choice as far as upping to the video card rather than have the integrated graphics.... you did well man... be happy)

I see that you opted for the best screen, tell me how it is once you get it, and congrats! This should be a great notebook.

Sounds like you did great. Its always better to go with a higher processor since it is harder to upgrade. If you want to, you can always extend your warranty when it expires [

I think upgrading the processor/video is a good idea, but why did you dump the warranty. The cpu/video speed won't make a bit of difference if the lappy craps out in 366 days.

Not to mention it is worth it to get the 9 cell over the 6 cell. Unless you plan to have it on ac alot... 6 cell gets you hmm about 3 hours average max 4 hours I believe... 9 cell max 6 hours average 5

actually I did read your post but I was telling you what you should get... 1.6 - 1.86 won't be that much of a difference... well not $200 more difference. I would have rather spent $65 more bucks on the 128 mb ram vid card instead of 64 mb card. But that's me. And as for the warranty junk check your insurance company.. they may have a plan which could be cheaper then the $300 + you have to shell out to dell.. Not sure.... But basically most people upgrade their notebooks after 3-5 years from what I've seen.
As for blah blah blah telling me I'm wrong I was just telling you the short of how you would get the most for your money.

from what i've read in other forums, you made a good move. apparently the best screen has some sort of problem with it.
i think upgrading the clock speed is also a good idea just to be safe.
the warranty's a waste of time beyond a year because by then your laptop's out of date so you might as well get a new one anyway if an expensive problem forms.
so overall it was definitely a good move. enjoy your laptop -

go for teh 128 x300 instead of the 64 x300, its a incredibally cheap price difference and much worth it.

how did you get july 1 shipping dates? Today i just built a custom system from dell, and thier approximate ship date was june 23. Why is that?
