    Hi everyone,

I ordered the Dell 700m after reading positive reviews here. Upon receipt, I find that the text is extremely small on the screen and the keyboard is awkward to type on. I wanted a lightweight and portable option, plus there was the $500 off coupon, but comfort and ease of use is more important. So I'm wondering if I should return this one and get either the 630m or the 6000 instead. Any advice?

    Thanks!

    Susan

If you are not happy with it, you should return it. You should fill out the FAQ so we can help more.

You might also want to read up on screen types and resolutions. I believe the 700m is XGA on a 12 inch screen. It sounds like you will want XGA on a 14 or larger screen. Clearly, getting an SXGA+ 14 inch screen will just give you the same small text you are having problems with now.

Just to mention . . . I have read that "small text" is one of the biggest complaints at Dell Tech Support. While they do have some "fixes" available, the real solution is to steer their customers towards lower resolution screens. (That's right, LOWER resolution. High resolution means more pixels on the screen, which makes everything smaller).

hey spaceman, then for the 6000, would you recommend the WSXGA and not the WSXGA+ because trying to squeeze 16xx pixels on to a 15.4" screen is ridiculous.

Well, for Susan I would. But display screens are a very subjective matter. If your eyesight is good, and you don't mind small text, then there is no doubt that a higher resolution would give you more screen "real estate".

Screen resolution is personal preference, correct-a-mundo. I would strongly advise seeing a screen with the resolution you want in person before you buy - don't want to have buyer's remorse. ;)

stick with the 700m, you got it for the size, the 6000 is too big to carry around all the time.

If you bought the 700m for size and mobility, you will be greatly dissapointed by the 6000's lack of mobility. As for resolution, isn't much you can do but you should expect that kind of font size from a small notebook such as the 700m.

Unfortunately, there is no ideal solution here- the other units have larger screens and options for the same resolution over a larger screen area, which will make the fonts larger, but the 14" screens are heavier units. I, too, hate the high resolution screens and since the 700m has the same resolution as the bigger units, it is relatively higher resolution for its size. You might want to try setting the display to larger fonts in device manager...it helps a little, without sacrificing the native resolution.

Hopefully the text and image quality won't be to unbarible when that is done.

the 700m is nice, the arrow keys suck and the mouse buttons suck to. other than that its a good laptop... 630m or 6000 is gonna be a brick compared to it.. you cant have everything you want in a laptop. your gonna gain some weight for the things u want

Yup, if you want compact size, you are going to compromise some aspect of performance.

My question is, cant you go to display preference and set it to lets say 1024xxx?
