HI Guys, I got my XPS 1530 after a long wait, but i found out that there are quite a good ammount of scratches on the volume panel part, the screen cover below always touches the battery while opening the lid and there is considerable gab near the left hinge.
And of course i got the famous SEC 3350 display screen with a bit of light bleed on the edges. I am not sure how grainy is my screen...what exactly does a grainy screen mean??
Suggest me guys...

Stop being a worry wart!

If you're not sure if you have a grainy screen...YOU PROBABLY DON'T! You've been reading around this forum too much
But hey, if you don't like it, call them up and return it or have a tech come out I guess
Sounds to me like you got a good system and giving it a bad wrap because almost everyone here does so. Be happy you got a good one man -

That's what a sparkly/grainy screen looks like... -
That part you are talking about that touches the battery every time you open your laptop is bad. I had to send my laptop back because of it.
I think you should send it back and get another one. if the new one come with bad screen you can swab them. if not then you are good.
You get to keep this system you have until the new one arrives. DHL. or UPS will pick your older system from your house. so it won't cost you time or money. -
Grainy screen
-
Yeah, this crap about "If you're not sure if you have a grainy screen...YOU PROBABLY DON'T!" is over. There is not variation in the Samsung screens in terms of the grainy, sparkly, glinty effect, only the fact that some users do not have anything to compare with. The screens are still readable and one of the biggest faults which you can plainly see in the snapshots is that the whites are gray. Obviously, every other color is grayer, too, but will not be as noticeable as the contrast between white and gray is the greatest. Note that light leakage is variable and completely unrelated.

WTF?! You can't take a screen capture to show a grainy screen. That goes beyond not understanding a grainy screen.
If you like your computer, keep it. If you don't like it, return it. It can't get any simpler than that. And boy are we tired of saying it. -

Hard to believe given that every other picture here looks like it was taken from a 3 year old cameraphone by an 8 year old with parkinsons, but I'll take your word for it.

Guilty as charged. -
hi, how does one find out what screen was placed in my 1530?
-
There's so much complaints posted about the screen and wished people could just do a search first. Almost all the threads mentions it.

It's funny when I see someone ask a really common question like this and get a bunch of replies that complain about the question and take just as much time to not answer the question as it would take just to answer it. I've been reading this forum and have seen the answer posted many times so I'm familiar with it. And it does make it seem like a dumb question. However, I find forum's search algorithms and result formats to be really crappy and I know how hard it is to find specific information sometimes. Add to that many, if not most, forum posters take very little care to use proper grammar and spelling. I don't have Vista, which you surely do, so I can't tell you exactly how to find the model, but if you go into Device Manager and look at Monitors and select the "Plug and Play" monitor and look at the properties and look at the details and look at the Device Instance Id, it will say something like SEC or LPL.

That comparison of a good vs grainy screen I think is not a photo. I think it's a mockup of what a grainy screen looks like. There's no way a photo can look that pixel perfect.
In any case it's a good example of what the grainy screen looks like. -
The scratches on the volume are probably not scratches. The plastic cover is probably there and just needs to be removed.
The screen touching the battery is probably just the screen bezel is not completely snapped on. Just get a popsicle stick or something similar and push it on.
If the screen doesn't bother you, there is nothing wrong with it.
Just my opinions... -
If you don't even know if you have a grainy screen and/or you are totally content with what you are looking at, then keep it obviously. If you are noticing a grainy screen and you know that you will regret your purchase if you don't rectify it, then replace the screen if you can or return the notebook. It really is a simple concept.
I sit here with my Vostro 1500 on the way with a WXSGA+ screen, and I am not going to overanalyze anything when I get it. I am NOT going to go straight into Device Manager to see which model screen I got.
I am simply going to be happy and fire up the notebook, which will be my first, and I will do my normal tasks and see if the screen is grainy or bothers me. If it does, I will take action. If not, I am just going to enjoy the thing and not worry about which manufacturer made the screen.
Once I make up my mind, then and only then, I will check out the manufacturer just for kicks. But if it is a Samsung, I am not going to return it if I already had no beef with it. -
As an owner with an "OK" Samsung screen (the viewing angles are horrible) I will throw my $.2 in.
I think a lot of the issues that have been raised are legit, and the fact that people who ordered a brand new laptop expect that they are receiving the best possible product that the company can supply. Seeing the two screens side by side is very telling, and knowing that I could of had a better product but don't due to luck of the draw is very disappointing. I finally got a technician to send me a LG, and I want to be able to see if it is actually better than what I have now, and if not, I will keep it. I will not settle for knowing that I could have a better product and not trying to rectify it. -
Great posts...the last 2 pretty much summed it up. Mine should be here 2/6 and that is exactly the way I will look at it...cheers!!!

My 1530 arrived today with a Samsung 1680x1050 screen (despite assurances when ordering I'd get a LG). My two thoughts are (i) the grainyness effect is much milder than appears in the comparison pic and (ii) the viewing angle is appalling, I can move my head 3" in any direction and get totally different colour, brightness and contrast. It's going back. (Fabulous computer other than that though.)

Follow up is I pointed out they had promised me a LG screen. The rep started not calling me back when he promised, initially said would get back to me, didn't, so I called him and he says give him 24-48 hours... nothing, I call him and he says it's nearly 7 days and if don't sort it out soon I won't be able to return (I'm in the UK). I point out the UK 7-day rule depends on when I tell them it's no good, not when they get around to actually doing anything about it. He says he'll call back in 5-10 mins. I actually heard from him next 2 weeks later...
So I tried another rep, explained I really liked it but just wanted the screen I was promised. He said best bet was to return for a refund and then re-order (presumably less work for him and he isn't losing any commission), so I did that.
Two weeks later I hear from the original rep, says "good news", I can re-order and be guaranteed to get a LG screen, just one catch, have to pay an extra 90 quid from the priviledge (about 180 dollars). Since he promised me I would get one originally and then ducked me in the hope I'd get stuck with the computer I wasn't, somewhat unsurprisingly, all that motivated to place an order. I did manage to be polite and wished him a good weekend, but this isn't encouraging me to recommend Dell to anybody, least of all myself when I have to recommend what new servers the company will get (which was going to be Dells...)
Ho hum... -
I can just see the screen type options:
() 1280x800 (included),
() 1440x900 (add $75)
() 1680x1050 (crappy) (add $100)
() 1680x1050 (good) (add $180).
Reminds me of another post on this topic where someone said, in effect, give us the option to buy the screen. Wondering if Dell took them up on the idea

() 1680x1050 (good) (add $280).
LoL and sad at the same time though... -
