    wow what a beautiful machine
im coming from a macbook pro btw, i got sick of Mac OS, it was way to simple for me
anyway there are no problems with my 1330, it runs so cool! my mac used to heat up really fast
the only problem im having is that pccillin keeps asking me to update it, and I do but it keeps telling me over and over to download the same thing and then it tells me to restart, so i just set pccillin update to manual, also out of the box my battery was full and it ran out very quick
my t5250 is very fast, nothing slow runs at all,

I have that same problem with PCcillin on a 1720. I set mine to manual and check the updates myself by right-clicking the pill icon in the tasbar and using the "Update Now." If it says it has an update around 400 or 500K in size, I ignore it. I don't think it's really there. I could update and reboot all day long and it would never take. For a while this non-updatable update was 509KB in size, but now it seems to be 433KB in size. It's interesting that other people are having the same problem with PCcillin. I wonder if it's a problem with the Dell version of PCcillin.

Don't run your system without an Anti-Virus software. These softwares are there to detect the viruses before they cause any damage. AVG and Avast use extremely low system resources. Performancewise you will not even know that you have an Anti-Virus software running 24/7.

Any defects? I remember the day I got my m1330, this monday XD, I searched for defects and didn't find any.
I started noticing the cpu whine later that day but it was fine, I can deal with it
And just a few hours ago, I just noticed that the top left part of my screen has this little gap...while the right side doesn't..small defect. I can live witih that too..

    m1330 ftw!

There seems to be less number of defects in systems manufactured in November 2007! This is from a statistics we have done at our office!

the only "defect" i notice is that my F4 and F5 keys are not level with the rest of the keys, they are lower than the rest
only by a tiny bit and its not noticeable unless you look at the keyboard from an angle. im not going to call dell or anything as this is not worth a technician coming to my house.

and when do you really use the F-keys anyway?

The only time I use 'em is to access the BIOS, or to get Windows to boot into safe mode!

I'm using AVG along with ZoneAlarm Firewall. Both are free and so far I'm happy to say that I've not been hit by anything. I'm using this on all 4 of my notebooks. :D

yup! all Micro$oft security stuff is pointless! Remember when they said XP was the most secure version of Windows ever....well it took about 2 hours from when it was launched for someone to crack it....some "security", eh?!

Not at all. The Windows Firewall that was released with XP SP2 and onward is much better than not having any software firewall. It's based off of Tiny Personal Firewall so it's decent. There are better aftermarket software firewalls available though. If you have cellular broadband like I do through AT&T/Cingular then you don't have to ever worry about inbound attacks because noone can get to my machine from outside. I'm sitting behind a NAT on AT&T's side and online security tests shows that I'm completely stealthed. You also can't trace my IP to my location. Only thing then you have to worry about is outbound stuff with whatever software you have installed sending your personal info out on the net.

There's really no such thing as a completely secure OS. No matter how secure they make it there's always going to be better crackers and coders out there in the world somewhere that can break it. It would be the same way with Apple OSX and Linux but most hackers and crackers don't care to bother with wasting time on a small user base.

true...but it got hacked in 2 HOURS!!! Not 2 months, not 2 weeks, not even 2 DAYS!!

2 hours basically mean PATHETIC security!!

Wrong! Your IP CAN be traced, no matter what firewall, NAT, PROXY Server, etc you are behind! It will obviously take A LOT more effort and skill to do so...but it can be done.

"Micro$oft", as you call it, has much better security than Mac OS X. Mac people are so obsessed with their OH MY GOD iLIFE (tm) that they don't bother making any sort of capable security software. Once the scrawny Apple user base becomes big enough to attack, Macs won't stand a chance against malware.

And the default Windows firewall is useless, true. But don't lump ALL firewalls for Windows under that umbrella. There's plenty of great stuff out there, which is more than one can say for the Mac.

Who said I was a Mac user?! The only time I've EVER used a Mac is when messing about with them in a shop! :p :p

And its not just about user base! If they REALLY wanted to attack a HUGE user base, they would focus on UNIX!! Why?! Because 90% of the MAJOR servers across the world use it...thats why!

And what better way to attack a MASSIVE user base, then taking down all the servers?!

The large windows userbase does play its part, but its not JUST the userbase that counts! Some people do it just cos they hate Microsoft (Microshaft/Micro$oft (take your pick)). Others do it, just cos its an easy operating system to exploit...

So what was the point in having a go at Macs, and their (non-existant, as you put it) security?

I thought it was something to do with the capacitors on the CPU or perhaps the north bridge vibrating. Presumably they vibrated because they were oscillating at their natural frequency(Electrical & Electronic Engineering 101 ;)). So, they would've needed to alter the capacitors for ones which didn't oscillate at those frequencies or perhaps add capacitors to filter out whatever ringing was occurring before it affected the problem capacitors. It'd be interesting to know the full details but I'm sure they'll be posted somewhere soon.

    Cheers,

    jahboo

If you do a quick Google for two fingered scrolling you'll find a Windows version. Never used it myself but it may do the trick. I find the trackpad on the M1330 perfectly adequate though.

    Cheers,
