In fact, I'm typing this message on it now. I ordered it last Sunday and here it is 7 working days later. Not bad. Everything is just as I ordered it. No blemishes and no bad pixels. The screen is all I hoped it would be and the brightness and clarity of it helps with the high native resolution. Configuration:

    2.8GHz
    WSXGA+ screen
    512MB
    60GB 7200 RPM HD

It doesn't seem as fast as my 2.4GHz desktop, but I haven't benchmarked it. Some observations: It isn't as big or as heavy as I thought it would be. The pictures seem to make it look more imposing than it really is. I was a little disappointed with the sound. Most reviews say it is the best sound yet from a notebook, but I guess I expected miracles and it isn't possible in the small case that isn't designed for acousics. I think I could dial it in nicely if there was some EQ available, but I haven't even found any simple bass and treble controls. Two pointer options are nice and they both work very well, but I bought a USB mouse anyway. Next purchase is a wireless kit so I can share my internet connection with my desktop.

    Congratulations!

I do not know your experience with other notebooks, but I would like to as you if you think the 7200rpm HDD makes a big difference over the 5400rpm or 4200rpm speeds.

    Thanks!

Did you always have you heart set on the 9100? I had to chose between the 9100 and the 8600. I went with the 86 simply for travel purposes with college and stuff. I felt that the 8600 would also have a more complete battery life also!

    CONGRATS ON THE COMPUTER!

    1.8GHz......$135 upgrade
    512MB.....$75 upgrade
128 MB DDR ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600.....$123 upgrade
    40 GB ULTRA HARD drive
    WIRELESS 1450 card...$27 upgrade

Having your Dell Inspiron 8600 Notebook catch fire because of an overheating video card.....priceless
