^__^ I'm loving it so far.
Do have kind of a burning question though.
How do I go about transferring files from my desktop to my notebook without setting up a network? Can I just use a USB cable between the two?
Also, what program can I use to check my GPU temp? I'm curious to see if my 1705 suffers from the heat problems seen on this board.

Man, that is what I am looking to buy. I hope you post any updates on the performance, video card option, etc.

You'll have to setup some sort of network between your notebook and desktop to transfer files, unless you have an external HD or a lot of DVDs/CDs. You can use I9kFanGUI to measure CPU/GPU temps. and fan speeds.

From what I have heard it can be done without a router, or network. You would need a "crossover cable" and not a normal CAT-5 cable. Now I am not sure what happens after this, but it can be done.

Crossover info:

For me, setting up a networking was alot better and faster. All i need was cat cables since i already had a router in use -
Using a crossover cable or usb cable is the easiest option. Get a crossover a cable setup a two computers network using the same workgroup name. Then you will see your desktop computer in My Network Places. Just copy files, that's it.

for temeratures, I use this program called SpeedFan from http://almico.com It measures the temperatures of the hard drives, as well as the GPU and CPU temps, you can also control the fan speeds

Well, so far I'm lovin it. I did encounter the heating issue, but I have I9Kfangui always running the fans at slow and now I idle at 61 degrees. I will rarely be far from a power outlet so this is not a concern for me.
Media Direct is set-up and is a great little feature, DVD playback is supurb.
As for games, I've only tried WoW and Fable: TLC as of now. WoW is running at native res. (I got the WUXGA+ TrueLife screen) on all high settings at a constant 60 fps. Fable runs just as well on high at native res.
Definately not disappointed at all. -
The Cat-5 X-over is the cheapest if you roll your own or get ready made. However, if you can afford it I would shop for a External USB/Firewire drive as xAMDvsIntelx suggested. I have seen the 160 Gig drives for $100 bucks or so.
Transfer the files you want to the external then to your laptop and you have created your first of many backups! Way easier than DVD and much faster.
Enjoy! -
Congrats it is a great laptop
Got my E1705 today!
