I got mine 2 days ago and been playing around with vista.
Few feedback.
Pro
1. I love the build, very strong
2. Great value
3. Crystal clear screen. I got 1440x900
4. Nice keyboard.
5. Web cam for $30
6. Bluetooth for $20
7. Bat life. balance setting can run you min 4 hrs with some installations. 9cel
Con
1. Weight. I use to have 14" dell 640m. Vostro seem a lot heavy..maybe the bat.
2. using head set, u can hear very small distortion noise. It actually does not bother me.
3. Built in speak with no base. Overall sound quality is good and very loud for lappy.
4. Vista home: very slow. I will be upgrading to 2gig on my mem soon. Not sure vista Pre will help on speed... This is my first time dealing with Vista. I am not a big fan, yet. I am sure how long win xp will provide support and updates. I know they stopped on Win 98...)
5. Battery bit loose. It's tolerable.

have you seen the 1420 inspirons? how do they compare? -

-
Is that the deal in UK?????
I know that US does not offer that deal. -
is it inconveniently heavy? i was thinking of cancelling 1500 for 1400. but i fear my shipping date will be in late august/early sept.
-
I basiacally got extremly lucky and the Dell Rep i talked to was very polite and offered me so much when i told her that im a student and am low on money she felt sorry lol and i sucked up to her as if thats all i've been taught to do. The deal is so good that when i called 2 other Dell reps they said they cant match the price themselves! -
damn
i want a mouse, headphones, and remote -
Is your battery loose?
-
Grats on nice deal!!! -

Yeah, its really no biggie, I contacted Dell and they are sending me a new battery... We will see if that fixes it...
-
I got my Vostro 1400 yesterday. Yes my battery (9 cell) is loose as well. Yes it bothers me a lot. Quick fix - I stacked 3 strips of black electrical tapes on each of the 2 tracks (on the laptop itself) where the battery slides into. No more loose battery, feels much more solid, the way it should have felt.
I highly doubt another battery would fix it. A Latitude D820 I had also had a loose battery. I "fixed" that in a similar fashion
Another note, my Vostro 1400 came with 2 scratches on the top and bottom shellI will be calling Dell about that tomorrow
I can tell you the top and bottom shell are mag-alloy - I see metal under the 2 scratches
Other than that I am *VERY* impressed with the Vostro 1400! Very very impressive for the price - T5470 C2D CPU, 1GB, 120GB, 1400x900 screen, DVDRW, Geforce 8400, bluetooth, 9cell battery, *MAGNESIUM ALLOY* shell, all for $650. How can you beat that?! Dell got smart, that same config now costs $759, with 2GB RAM BUT with 6cell battery now!

Wow, How did you pull that off. I have same set up with web cam.
came out to $700 plus tax. From $599, web cam +$30, bluetooth $20 and 1440 x 900 $40. Came out to $750 including tax. Still is very good deal IMO. -
I picked up my Vostro 1400 at the shipping depot this morning (I am Canadian).
Here's are the pics for the whole thing.
My Spec:
T5470, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, GF8400 GS, XGA+ TL, DVD/RW, Dell 1390 wireless, web cam, 9 cell.
HD is a Toshiba MK1237GSX, and DVD is DS-8W1P (Philips BenQ, yet to find RPC1 firmware). Dell does not include the Vista Home Basic DVD (ya.. like I really want it... lol)
I will update more info as I am installing XP. -

very nice, mine is in boxing right now, i ordered on the 28th of july... doubt its going to take much longer for me =D
-
Fixed it!!! Thank you electrical tape!
-
I'm gonna put some tape right now also.
Guess, we gotta do what we gotta do!!!!!!!!
Overall, wonderful lappy for price!!!!! I am loving it except vista basic. They should have new update come for vista. I am calling tomorrow to get vista pre.
I hope, it's worth it. -
OK so I rounded down to 650 and you rounded up to 700. I got the same deal you got. $599 for the 5470CPU, 1GB, 120GB, Geforce8400, DVDRW; then I added the 1400x900 screen for $40, and Bluetooth for $20. $705 including tax. I didn't get the webcam. I'll never use it, and who knows how much battery it sucks down even if you turned it "off".
Yes very good deal! Good thing I got it before Dell force 2GB RAM on you for an add'l $100, and 6cell instead of 9!

who buys a laptop to end up taping it with electric tape

Does anyone of your Vostro comes with Vista Installation DVD?
Dell Canada includes the OS Installation disc and the driver disc with the system. Dell USA does this differently?
I went to Dell support and checked the original equipment. The LCD panel is suppose to be by AUO, they switched it to a Samsung. The DVD module is suppose to be a LG/Hitachi, they switched to Philips BenQ.
What parts do you guys have in your 1400?
I am so surprised that the Vostro 1400 is actually made by Asus. With my M1210, I8200, I1150, 640M, the Vostro has a much cleaner "bottom". Asus likes to put all the components at the bottom (CPU, modem, WLAN), while Compal likes to hide something under the keyboard. -
