I must first start out by saying that Dell support can be a little frustrating to say the least. I was diconnected twice before I got to someone who was of little help. My screen on my 1420 is also grainy so I wanted to see if there was anything they could do. Well they wanted me to unscrew something on the screen to check a cable or something. Why would someone who has no experience messing with the inside of these things be asked to do this? What if I messed something up. Then they wanted me to download some updated video drivers. Would this fix a grainy screen? I personally dont think it would. But thats why I am here. Should I try to adjust the cable? Should I just insist on a new screen? I should probably just deal with the screen but since my wifes screen on her 1501 is so clear it makes me want to get mine fixed, and mines a better laptop.

If you know for certain that the problems lies with the screen then you should just insist you want a new screen. if they ever ask you to check anything, just say you done it, checked it, didnt work, etc.

    What resolution? What panel?

I haven't see a true grainless WXGA+ for 1420 but SEC is significant better than AUO.

You have to go into the device manager under your display properties.. That is where the manufacturer ID is.

Also, how bad is the display? This is not the first time that somebody is reporting a grainy display on dell regular wxga system. This is really not exceptable if true. Panel makers have known how to make nice wxga these days so if dell is using grainy ones they must be using lower grade glass me thinks. Are you sure your system has a wxga TL?

It says generic PnP monitor? So I have no idea who makes it? How do I tell if its TL?

That's LG Phillips. For the 1520 that's the best brand but I don't know about the 1420.

Sorry to tell you but a monkey do the Dell phone tech's job!

All they do is read from scripts and make you update drivers and, ultimately, will have you do a system restore. Just play their game until it doesn't work (of course) and then you will get setup with a new LCD or system replacement.

Request for a replacement and also speak to the inconvenience department and see what they can offer you for your suffering!
