    Hi,
I just received my vostro 1400 replacement and I am very happy with everything except for the SCREEN.....
My first one had SEC and the replacement came with AUO 1644 and it one is grainy... but somewhat brighter than SEC.

What should I do? Should I call Dell and ask for another replacement???
Or should I just live with a grainy screen...?

Also, the Backspace key on my replacement "squicks" when i press it multiple times.... xD

You ordered a new system and it should be in perfect condition.
Give them a call and get a replacement once again. Keep doing this until you receive your perfect system.

Yeah, I also just got a replacement with a AUO1644 grainy screen. It is brighter and has a better shade of white than my SEC3157, but I don't plan on keeping it, the graininess really annoys me. I guess Dell might still be using grainy AUO screens, despite some rumors otherwise.

I just got my 1520, and it has the AUO screen. I have to say that if I hadn't read anything in the forums about it, I probably wouldn't have noticed any grain. I guess it looks a little textured where it shouldn't, but it really doesn't bother me enough to want to replace it. The colors are beautiful and really bright. I'd rather have a little grain than washed out colors.

So I asked if I can just send back the replacement i got today and get a new one, still said no. Wth?

Personally, I don't think any of Dells wxga + screens are worth a crap. The SEC's are darker, and have pathetic viewing angles. The vasoline/greasy/sparkle/grainy or however you see it AUO's are worse. If Dell makes a LG wxga + that might be better, don't know. All I know is my HP regular LG wxga screen is 100X nicer then either the Dell SEC or AUO wxga + were. My advice, just stay away from any of dells wxga + displays. You give up too much in screen quality. When the new inspiron line was introduced a few months back this was the general consensus that people agreed on. I don't think anything has changed. The hi res screens are still having the issues that have been there since day one of the new inspiron launch.

For the record my non high res (WXGA) SEC screen is dim and slightly yellowish and my WXGA AUO screen shows some oily/grain/sparkles... so it's not just the high res ones that have problems.

That was my thoughts as well when I canceled/returned my 1420. I don't think dell has anything going on in regards to quality control with their displays in general. That is the feeling I got. I did not feel like giving them a third shot at it. But, in my opinion, AUO is just a cheap/inferior builder of displays. There are some people here that do say they have a nice looking AUO but they are in the minority I think. Someone else said a rep told them dell was not going to use AUO for their glass anymore. Don't know, but that would be a smart step to avoid ruining their reputation.. again.
