My Vostro 1500 shipped with a Samsung WSXGA+ screen (model ID: SEC3350). It was noticeably grainy in comparison to other notebooks and it also had light leakage.

I managed to get Dell to replace my screen with an LG WSXGA+ display (model ID: LPLF300).

The LG display is not grainy, is brighter and sharper. It is quite simply magnificent when compared to the Samsung display I previously had.

I note that there has been some suggestion on these forums that the graininess is not existent, not a problem or is hardly noticeable to worry about. After having seen the difference between the two, I can categorically state that the grainy screens are a problem, are you are entitled to expect better from Dell.

For those that have received a Samsung (model ID SEC3350), ring up Dell and request an LG display (model ID LPLF300). It may be best if you quote the part number Dell assigns the display which is XK309 to make it easier for Dell.

Edit: Ring Technical Support NOT Customer Care. Customer Care can only replace the entire laptop and not replace specific parts like Technical Support Can. They are different departments with different roles.

While you can't specify which screen you get when you order, you can certainly request which one you get when they replace the screen.

I requested an LG and they promised to send one out to the technician and they did. Simple.

i just have that luck... after three vostro's with bad screens i spend nearly 10+ hours on the phone with dell working this out. and in retunr i get a damn sec which just about everywhere i read now online of course after i already ordered it... the wsxga+'s are super grainy and most people says the color sucks on them... i dont know the hp is looking better even as i type this.. i may be done with dell.. if the new one gets here and it looks like what everyones been saying i am not getting anything else replaced..and see i while going through escalations told them i wanted a lg... he said he would put the request in and just to show it makes no difference as he said it will not gaurantee anything.... im done after this

Zfactor, I don't think you have been listening to what I have been saying, as well as others who have had the problem fixed. But, I will say it one last time

No matter what they say Dell can not specify the manufacturer of the screen in a new laptop. What comes of the assembly line comes off the assembly line.

What you can do is ring Dell (once you have received the laptop) and request that they send out a technician to replace the screen. BUT, you have to demand the LG display. Otherwise they will just grab any screen from the pile.

    Wrong.

Not only does Dell acknowledge that the SEC screens are Samsung, but I have seen the back of my previous SEC screen (when the technican took it out) and there is a big fat Samsung logo on a white sticker. Yes the oval with the white lettering.

I've seen people at this forum say that the screens are not Samsungs but after seeing official logo on the screen, their credibility has gone out the window.

I suggest people get their facts right before making statements in bold and making them look very foolish and immature.

samsung makes some screens for seiko and visa versa.. i posted this after talking with them.. samsung even though they put the label on them does not make all their own screens... neither does seiko epson.... samsung told me they oem for a LOT of companies who put their own sticker on those screens as well...

Thats interesting. But just shows that boonkauc can not categorically state that SEC screens are not Samsung in bold lettering.

The fact remains, the are branded as Samsungs and Dell recognises them as much, and they well could be manufactured by Samsung.

But this is all getting way off topic :)

how long did it take for them to ship out the replacement and have the tech fix it? and also how did you approach them with the lg screen replacement, did you just flat out say replace my screen with the lg and then say the part number?

I flat out requested the LG display. I didn't say the part number because I didn't know what it was until I saw the replacement documentation. I thought that by informing everyone what the part number is may make it easier as some Dell reps have no idea.

Only took a couple of days to get it fixed. The only reason I had to wait was because they had to source an LG screen from overseas as there was none currently in the warehouse. But I have on-site warranty.

How do you know if the Vostro 1500 WSXGA+ is the LG?

I have not received it yet but it says that my screen is:

    320-5545

Can I expect the LG screen?

You don't have the Samsung. I'm looking at my invoice right now and my part number for the 15 inch WSXGA+ is 320-5461.

So you've either got the LG or AUO.

anyone here from malaysia? would the 1520's be able to get the LG screen as a replacement? i've got the sec3550, and it's horrible. well i thought i could live with it, but i get horizontal lines across my screen, and dell techs and care told me it's just truelife and not a hardware failure. the words on the side column of this forum, all look smudged and red-ish on my screen. sigh. if dell says they build computers customized for us, then they should allow us to pick the screen we want, and if the general concensus shows that we don't want the sec screen and only LG for their wsxga+, they should just stick with lg and not get anymore screens from sec. damn it's frustrating. everything else about the laptop is excellent though. it's crap. getting screens from dell is worse than playing russian roulette.

haha what are your specs? the screen graininess issue does affect other resolutions too, not too sure. there seems to be alot of inconsistency. Some AUO screens are nice on certain a res, but downright horrible on others. this applies to SEC also.

I mainly started this particular thread to talk about WSXGA+ displays and to confirm to everyone that the LG in this resolution is perfect.

Therefore, I wouldn't use this thread to gather infromation about the reliability of LG's in other resolutions...

Spoodo, get on the phone to Dell and tell them that you are unhappy with the screen and demand an LG. If they start telling you some crap that it's truelife, tell them you have seen an LG screen with truelife and it looks better.

My Samsung SEC3157 is faitly grainy and the colors seem washed out. So I called Dell and the technician had me hook up my LCD monitor to the laptop to compare. I didn't realize how bad the laptop's LCD was until I compared the two. Colors were much more vibrant on the external LCD and there was no grain. So the technician finally came to the coclusion that it was in fact the LCD on the laptop and wanted to setup an appointment for a replcament. At that point I requested that they use the LG screen and she went off on how they replace parts with the same specs that I ordered. I tried to explain to her that it was, but she didnt quite get it. I'm going to call back right now and see if I have better luck with someone else.

haha i did! and they said, i'm sorry we cannot allow u to request for the screen. what we can do is send a screen that isn't the one on your inspiron at the moment, meaning no SEC3550, then i was thinking, dang...AUO? no way!! i did request for an LG, and they said they can't guarantee that they can send an LG, but definitely they won't send the SEC. what other manufacturers does Dell use for their WSXGA+ screens? and whats the verdict on them?

According to the second person I talked to Dell is only using Samsung screens for the Inspirons. Seems like we know more about their product line then they do. This person was more helpful than the last.

Anyone know the part number for the 15 inch LG displays with a resolution 1440x900? She said that might help if I decide to call back.

I held back on actually asking for a tech to come out because it isn't worth it if I gonna be having the same problem again.

Try calling someone else Spoodo as Dell ensured that I got the LG screen. They can specify exactly what part you are to receive.

If they do send you another Samsung, simply call them again straight after and tell them that you are having the same problems. They'll then get the message that they need to send you something else.

i had two people speak to me at the same time. someone from the care department and another from the technical department. they said they can honour me the replacement once only and whatever i get after this is final. they seem to always connect to the same individual no matter how many random calls i make. i'm in malaysia right now, and they told me they can't specify at all. they want proof of my graininess eg. photos!!! sigh....no idea. i guess i'll just wait til the tech guy comes and i'll see what he brings. if anyone can help me out through dell malaysia please!!

LG-Philip is often good. but they have also (often) more light bleeding. BUT you can easily get Samsung who is better then LG-philip. its just luck or bad luck.

my LG-Philip (matte) wxga+ 17" was amazing. (but i got a new True life by Dell anyway)

also remember that Dells partnumber not allways is correct.

The LG displays in WSXGA+ do not have light bleeding while the Samsungs do.

The LD displays in WSXGA+ do not have graininess while the Samsungs do.

I have not come across anyone who as good Samsing WSXGA+ display.

Dell's part numbers would presumably be always correct. Why else assign part numbers to control inventory when they will be sometimes wrong?

I do not understand what you are talking about.

Please only contribute to this particular thread if you have reliable information about WSXGA+ displays, otherwise you will simply confuse people who are looking here for helpful and reliable information.

    Hi guys! :)

My service part for the 17" Widescreen WXGA+ (1440x900) Display with True Life that I will get for my Inspiron 1720 (made in Malaysia) is RY577. Which one is it? Samsung, SEC, LG, or AUO??

SEC is an abbreviation for samsung. In the same way LPL is LG Phillips.
