That first picture will shutup all those people still saying that SEC is Seiko and not Samsung (read earlier posts in this thread)

I rang back to try again but apparently now that I've requested a refund there's nothing that can be done. Oh well, hopefully this shortage of glass will have been resolved by December/January and I'll place a new order then.

For those who can't see what it says on the box due to the flash, it's

    'Part no. XK309, 15.4" WSXGA+ LGP'

I think Datr has unfortunately been feed some complete BS.

If I were you Datr I would try and cancel the refund and make Dell fix the issue. I would also lodge a complaint because they seem to be stuffing you around bigtime compared to how they have treated me and others.

That LGP does not mean it is an LG screen.... LPL = LG Philips for the LG screen whereas LGP stands for Light Guide Plate....

Ash Hi Fi Zone is correct.

The only part of that information which identifies that the part is an LG screen is the part number XK309. And the only way we know that that particular part number corresponds with an LG WSXGA+ display is from experience.

i'm not saying it is, i'm just posting what it says on the box. The screen i received is an LG Philips, identified by the sticker on the rear of the screen which i forgot to take a pic of, and Dell's part number for the LG Philips WSXGA+ (XK309). My device manager identifies it as LPLF300. For those requesting for a swap, do provide them the part number and they should be able to help you out a lot easier. The XK309 has been verified by the technical department when i requested it. I said I know the part number for screen, and it matches. dang, how can be so careless and forget to take a pic of the LG sticker on the rear of the panel?? LOL, i did see it before the tech guy installed it.

If LGP only means light guide plate and thats not a manufacturer, why then do some others have Samsung and AUO in the spot of LGP? It doesn't make sense to have a technology in the description sometimes and then the manufacturer other times....

Ok I've just spent the last 40 minutes on the phone to Dell. I've managed to get the refund cancelled, and the manager has scheduled a meeting with the complaints department to find a solution and will be ringing me back Thursday. In the mean time he has guaranteed that while this problem persists I will be entitled to a full refund if it can't be solved despite the grace period ending tomorrow. I asked him to send that last bit to me in an email (twice) but he just kept saying it would be added to the case notes, so I'll ring back tomorrow to make sure that it has.

i am considering to buy a 1520 but besides the lack of a DVI port the display problems let me rethink whether i should order one :(
i need great colors for my graphical work, so it wouldn't be fine with a grainy lifeless display...
@spoodo: would you please make a picture of the alpinewhite back of your 1520 because i have never seen live pics of it and this color sounds interesting as i know it from previous dells...
how does the surface feel and how scratch-proof is it?

    Update:

I got my Vostro 1500 9 days after I ordered it.
I have the LG screen and it is easily the best screen that I've seen on any laptop regardless of price. But I have one dead pixel at the very top, and this very much bothers me. Very, very much. I'm torn b/c the chances that I get an LG screen again are probably pretty low.

I may just live with it b/c at 1680x1050 you can't really see it at normal viewing distances, but at the same time, I've tried to convince myself that it doesn't matter in my past laptops and over time I could not live with it.

I wonder if the 14 inch LG screens are different somehow as I just got my replacement 1400 and it's by no means the best screen I have ever seen... it's not even what I would consider good... next to a TL Vaio and Alienware machine it definitely has some kind of grain and rainbow effect...

Does anyone know if Dell has LG screens for the WXGA+ screens on the 1520? My Samsung is being replaced by another Samsung tomorrow because Dell insisted they were only using Samsungs for the screen I have. This was from six different technical service reps so hopefully they all weren't lying. I did tell them if this new screen had the same washed out colors I'd be on the phone with them again setting up another repair.

If you read some of my earlier posts you would have seen that I explained that the part number corresponds to a specific screen (specific size and resolution). If a part number corresponded to screens of different sizes how could Dell ensure that the correct size is sent out?

Sorry, but I do not know the part number for a 14" LG screen. Do a search. It is not really necessary to know, it just helps when requesting a particular replacement.

I didn't even know there was a problem. I've had my laptop for three weeks and just now learned it's the LG screen (LPLF300). Like everyone else who has one says, it's perfect.

So the guy who is supposed to replace the screen called yesterday and wanted to replace the screen then but I was out doing stuff. So he says I'll call tomorrow and do it sometime in the afternoon, I waited and waited, no call. I need this screen fixed ASAP as I'm moving out for college on saturday. What a joke.

Ring Dell Technical Support and tell them. They'll then ring the technician for you while your on hold and let you know what is going on.

Just got off the phone from Dell and was first told they couldn't call the company because they closed over an hour ago. Five minutes later the rep says her manager called the company and that I'll be getting a call in the morning from the technician.

That better happen. My dads pissed the 2,000 dollar laptop he just bought me is already having to be repaired and that I sat around and waited for nothing. I really do hope this screen is perfect as I can't imagine what it would be like getting them to send a tech out to put in another screen at my dorm. And I told the Dell rep tonight that if this Samsung is just as bad as the current one I'll be on the phone with them again tomorrow night demanding a replacement.

If worst comes to worst, my dad has Michael Dell's home number as one of his employees used to work for Mr. Dell and was in contact with him daily.

    Round 2 tomorrow....... :(

well my fathers a world class breeder so nah nah na na na *ahem*, theres 6 of us under the one roof. I got a shocking screen on my 1520. Sent it back and now I'm waiting for my cheque to get to me. I'm considering buying a USB Hard drive hey at least I won't get any nasty suprises springing from a 2G stick of memory + the poor screen I'll be using won't be my problem :).

can you call up Mr Dell and abuse him for his poor build quality in notebooks, I mean seriously when you pay that much for anything the least you want it to do for you is work properly

So I just got my screen replaced and guess what? It's an AUO and it's grainy as hell. So much for Dell replacing like for like parts like they said on the phone. I'll be back on the phone with Dell tonight especially when they said they couldn't get an LG and that it would only be replaced with a Samsung which is what I had before.

At this point I don't even care about screen resolution. I just want a screen that isn't grainy and has vibrant colors like it should. If that's the 1280x800 screen I'd take that, it doesn't matter. This couldn't have come at a worse time as I move into my dorm Saturday so they'll have to come out to my dorm to replace it. Won't that be fun, finding my dorm room, at a college of 20,000+ students.

This is the last time I order a Dell. Next time I'll be going the HP route.

Are the WXGA (1280x800) and WUXGA (1600? by whateever) having the grainyness or color issues? I'd love to have the WSXGA without the grain and such but from what it looks like they are the ones having the issues.

I guess I'll request to be upped to WUXGA or downgraded to WXGA for the replacement. Does that sound like it would minimize the chance of getting a bad screen again?

WUXGA is not available on the Dell 1500's, it is available on the Vostro 1700 though. Only WXGA, WXGA+ and WSXGA+ are available on the Dell 15.4" screens.

    WSXGA+ is 1600x1050.

As you can see from the title of this thread, the WSXGA+ displays manufactured by Samsung are having the grainy problems. However, the LG ones are not.

Grainyness problems are also present on the WXGA and WXGA+ displays. However, it depends on the manufacturer of the display.

I'll push for the downgrade with this next one then. If they give me their bull**** about like for like parts I'll give it right back to them about how they promised my Samsung be replaced with a Samsung (because they could only do like for like) and it was replaced with a grainy AUO.

I've got all the time in the world to deal with Dell. They're the ones losing money paying each time they replace an LCD (cost of the replacement and paying the third party contractor).

I just called Dell and they are sending another replacement LCD. This guy seemed to know what he was doing and I did request an LG or Samsung (which was much better than this crappy AUO). He said he'd do his best to get me an LG, but at the very least would get me a Samsung like I originally had.

Hopefully this one is better. As long is it's not grainy I'll be happy. I'd even settle for the last Samsung I had.

Finally! I got LG WSXGA+ display (model ID: LPLF300)- part number is XK309 for my Inspiron 1520 to replace my screen form Samsung WSXGA+ screen (model ID: SEC3350)- very grainy. After reading the first post and
    1) Chat with Tech : he told me install new driver for Nvidia Geforce 8600GT
    2) Chat with Manager Tech: she told me that ok to replace form Samsung to LG and told me to contact with Customer Care for replacing.
    3) Chat with Care: he said only replacement LCD is the same Samsung what i had
    4) Chat with Care: she said only replacement LCD is the same Samsung what i had (no more LG on stock)
    5) Chat with Care: he said only replacement LCD is the same Samsung what i had and said I can send my laptop to Dell for replace another laptop. I don't accept that because I need laptop for study and i'm sure about new laptop will have another grainy screen. He told me to contact with Tech support for LG.
    6) Chat with Tech: he said only replacement LCD is the same Samsung what i had. I'm not happy now. I said that I need to talk with his manager now (it took me 5mins for waiting). My head was very Hot with him. His manager understood my frustration. Finally She Oks to dispatch a LG for me :).
I'm happy and waiting for new screen & hope it better than the Samsung screen with very grainy.

See it just proves my point that the only way to get a screen replacement is being firm with Tech Support.

I hope people can learn from this and stop ringing Customer Care, it will save them heaps of time plus you'll likely get what you want. :)

PS. Good to see you finally got a good screen Lidrager! :)
