    Hello

I have had my Vostro 1500 for a couple of days and have got a grainy screen.

I have had an ongoing communication with CS for the last day or so, and it has come down to two choices.

Either, I have my Vostro refunded and I re-order or they have offered me a £30 refund.

If I re-order there is no guarantee I will get a better screen and will have to wait for 3 weeks probably to get it. Also as CS is not connected to sales I would probably not even get as good a deal that I thrashed out originally. Plus the offers have changed since then!

£30 refund is what it is but I might forever wonder 'what if' and regret not gambling on getting a better screen.

I went into PC World today and many of the screens on display were not much better except for 2 brands. Compaq and Asus. These screens were so much clearer it was amazing really.

The others including Sony seemed to have the sparkle and grain that afflicts mine. That leads me to think that my screen is not as bad as others and that replacing it might make it worse!!

    What should I do???

I have said to CS I need to think about my options and will contact them tomorrow.

If you ordered the higher res 1440 X 900 I would suggest dropping that down to a lower res 1280 X 800. The higher res screens are just not that great with Dell. Also you said that Compaq had a better screen. This is owned by HP and probably use the same panels as HP. I had a Dell and ended up doing your first option.. return for refund. I have a HP dv6500t and its nicer in every respect to the Dell 1420 I had. I don't think you can go wrong with a Sony or HP/compaq when it comes to nice displays. I understand that you saw a grainy sony, but that is probably rare. You hardly ever hear of complaints about Sony displays. But I don't think Sony's are any better then HP's and HP's are allot cheaper. If you want to stay with Dell, think of going with the lower res. If you already have, and feel the display is still grainy, then it might not get any better.

Yes sorry, I have the 1280x800 Truelife screen which id is 'LPLCC00'

This could be never ending, the search for the perfect screen with Dell. To get better it may require looking at another manufacturer.

    Thanks for the advice mate.

Correct, my friend has a Sony FZ150 and the screen I think is nicer than the Macbook Pro. Absolutely Gorgeous! But it's Sony and Sony is overpriced....

I was in the same situation as you are. I had a Vostro 1500 with a grainy 1440 X 900 (WXGA+) screen. I took to option to return it for a complete refund. Rather than take a chance on another 1500, I ordered what I should have ordered in the beginning, a Vostro 1700 with 1920X1200 WUXGA screen If this 1700 turns out to be grainy, I'll return it for a refund and look at other brands such as HP and ASUS.

Friend has 1280x800 XGA but it's AUO brand and it's near perfect.

If you had the WXGA+ screen i would have said take the money OR downgrade.

But since you have the WXGA, give it another shot and maybe you will get the AUO or a better LPLC

Looks like the customer support are trained to offer the 2 options for 'grainy' screen complaints.
My first Vostro 1500 had problems of noisy headphone jack & clicking hard disk.Within 10 days I got it replaced....
And the replacement laptop has the 'grainy' screen (not sure about the first one anyway).
The two options I have been offered is either a refund or wait until new set of LCD screens are available with Dell.
However I was not told anything about how long I may have to wait to get the screen replaced.

Most likey, I will be returning it for a refund next week....

You should have rang Technical Support not Customer Care.

As I have said in another thread all Customer Care can do is give you a refund or replace the entire system.

Technical Support on the otherhand can authorise for just the screen to be replaced.

In the thread I started ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=167789) I stated how I managed to get my grainy Samsung WSXGA+ replaced by Dell to a LG WSXGA+ display which is perfect.

I have also helped 3 other people on another forum get their screens successfuly replaced this week, and another 2 have their replacements scheduled.

What you have to do is ring technical support (they are the department that handles hardware and software issues) and request the specific display that does not have the problem.

Not true. It depends on which manufacturer you get for your display. My LG WSXGA+ display is perfect.
