SEC3350 is NOT seiko epson, it's SAMSUNG.
    SEC = Samsung Electronics Co.

OK, so I was planning on getting a 1520, but after reading about all these screen probs, I don't want one anymore.
So what other laptops are in the same price range with the same/similar video card options???
The Asus G1S is nice looking, but it is about $600 more...

Is there an HP model in 15.4 with a good video card??

i highly doubt it. unless we all have a different definition of "grainy" it's definitely rooted inately in the screen itself.

Kind of depressing reading all of these screen issues...You guys know how to take the fun out of a purchase, lol..(Just kidding).

I read in another thread that Dell was out of 15.4" displays and they were all back-ordered. Do you think Dell realized their mistake with the screen, and re-ordered new ones to solve the problem...Just hoping for the best!

well i think most of dell's customers dont' really know what a grainy screen is. LIke you can only see the grain when you're looking at bright screens, but during movies or anything, you definitely won't notice it.

i don't know i think for this cheap of a price, you get what you paid for. Dell's not going to buy you more expensive LCD's, so I think i'm pretty happy

FrozenDarkness well i think most of dell's customers dont' really know what a grainy screen is. LIke you can only see the grain when you're looking at bright screens, but during movies or anything, you definitely won't notice it.

What i saw was a cloudy screen, white color is not truly white it is white and gray mix together. I felt like there is an layer of oil on top of the screen. It is really not easy for your eyes to see or read text on the web page or in word document. You won't notice that on dark color backgrounds. I had never seen anything like that on my old Dells.
I think we all paid for screen upgrade so we should get what we paid for, right?

I definately believe the graininess comes from the glossy coating....i don't know if all glossy coatings from all computer manufacters looks grainy....maybe it is the quality of the glossy coating applied to the screen.

PS...on a side note....this intel draft n card really has some serious range..I am at my in laws house and am connected to a network that I know is at least 200 feet away...granted its only 1 signal bar but I am connected and surfing relatively well.

It's from the coating. My friend who works at Dell just confirmed it. He also confirmed they have no intentions of changing their LCD production methods or technology at this time.

So basically...if the screen looks fine to you, great ! Enjoy :)
If it's grainy or you don't like it...just return the unit. No amount of "repairs" and "replacements" will fix the problem. You might get a screen with a better application of the coating, but that's about it :\

it would be interesting to know the percentage of people w/each screen type that have a grainy screen or not. example: 20% of people with WXGA+ grainy, 80% fine. i don't know if it's possible without creating 3 different polls (one for each screen resolution)

Ouch! I was going to down-size our 6400+9300 to m1330+1520 (or XPS 15" if one comes out), and now this.

Whilst I do not expect these things to be perfect, but does this grainy issue make the screen of 1520 appear worse than 6400?

If there really is a problem with the screens, Dell may only be saying that they aren't going to do anything about it, because by doing so they are admitting to a defect and could be facing a recall of all those laptops sold so far, which has many implications. Trust me, if there is a problem, I'm sure they will have it corrected on future screens, particularly if it's affecting sales.

Yeah this screen, which I also have, is AU Optronics which from what I understand makes lcd's for several different brands (ie viewsonic). The screen doesn't look great to me, though it is my first lcd so I can't be sure. There appears to be light leakage and graininess on mine...

I just got my Inspiron 1520 with the 1280x800 anti-glare screen. No graininess. It looks fine. The differance between it and my 8bit display hp laptop are very miniscule. Only a graphics editor would notice enough for it to be annoying. Also, the dell screen has a much faster refresh so for gaming it is superior.

I ordered a refurb 1520 (wanted it to come in 2 days rather than a month). The screen is a bit grainy but not unbearable. It's a SEC3358. Ive seen other posts about graininess on the SEC3350 but not 3358. Does anyone have the 3358? I am wondering if Dell replaced the screen. Thanks!

OK, some time has passed, what do you think? If I'll order a dell inspiron 1520 for september 2007, maybe dell would have been finished fixing that grainyness and I would get a good screen laptop?

Dell does not make these displays. They can't fix them. Only the manufacturers can. Most of the issues reside with the higher res wxga + screen. Dell may be able to reduce the likelihood of graininess if they quit using the ones from manufacturers with higher return rates. But even so, it appears from the posts that even the SEC panels can be grainy. So to answer your question, the solution depends on the suppliers themselves not Dell. For now, the safest road is ordering the wxga display. Or taking a chance of luck with the higher res wxga +.

Everyone loves their anti glare 1280 X 800 screens. This is probably the safest option. You give up a little bit of contrast and color when watching movies/pictures with anti glare. I think the 1280 X 800 TL glossy stands up nicely as well.. The wxga + 1440 X 900 is the bad boy getting most of the graininess. Its a known issue with this resolution and plagues other notebook builders as well.

Absolutely. Its mostly wxga + screens getting bad graininess. But even with that resolution it is possible to get non grainy display. Many people, including myself have seen 1440X900 SEC panels that have had no grain or sparkles.

I've been using my 1520 for over a month now. I got the WSXGA+ screen. Honestly I can't really see any graininess. If I put it on an all-white background and stare at it like a "Magic Eye" poster, I can kinda-sorta see some grain in it, but if I'm going about my business typing papers, watching movies, or playing games, the screen is bright and beautiful  . I don't see why so many people are cancelling orders over this. It's nothing to fret over.

First, it only affects some screens worse then others.. And wxga+ is the worst. Yours is WSXGA+. So it depends mostly on resolution and manufacturer of display. If you read the complaints you would know that it is very possible to even get a good WXGA+. The fact that you have a good one only means you got lucky. Its simply the luck of the draw. Dell is using at least 5 different vendors for their glass. It varies wildly what you can end up with.

    Hmmm.

I just got my replacement Dell Vostro 1500, which I exchanged because of the crappy screen I got initially that had a discernable mesh pattern (grainy?), whites were yellowish, and had terrible backlight bleed.

My replacement Vostro 1500 has an awesome screen. Just the brightness isn't quite a bright as I'd like it to be, but everything else is awesome. I checked the "hardware id" in device manager/monitor/plug and play monitor/properties and they were both LPLF300 which seems to be LG.

I think the issue is more with Dell's piss poor quality control than the monitors themselves.
