Is it possible to manually upgrade the 8400m GS on a 1420 to a 8600 GT? I asked the sales rep if that is possible and he said that 14' doesnt have enough room for a better graphics card other than the 8400.

No it's not possible because the graphics card is soldered to the motherboard. Very few notebooks have the option for upgradeable graphics.
