So I got my dell notebook the other day (1400) and it came with an SEC with NO graininess. Awesome notebook except...

my audio headphone jacks are emitting a hiss when nothing is being played.

Dell want's me to have my motherboard replaced. Is there any other workarounds I can use?

I thought that was for the 1500/1520's. Dell stated it was a design flaw. But I never heard anything about it for the 1400/1420's.

I have the buzzing noise in the headphone ports of my Inspiron 1420. Not sure if I will bother contacting Dell about it until I hear a success story from someone else who had the same problem. I use an external USB sound card most of the time anyway :).
