This is an option in the BIOS. I have an Inspiron 6400 with an 80GB drive and was wondering if anyone knows how this will affect the performance, and how much quieter it makes it. I have it set at the moment but can't really tell the difference! Does it just work by making the HDD spin more slowly?

(By the way, does this forum have a search function?)

The search function is at top.if the noise doesn't bother you now, then dnt fiddle with it :)

If I am right it reduces the rpm.

I never understood why people make a fuss over HDD noise in laptops (Not you Snowjoke), but I have never had a laptop that had a HDD that was actually bothersome. No matter which end of the cost/performance spectrum from my 286 days to new c2d setups never has a HDD made so much noise as to bother me. But yes acoustic limits the HDD performance for less sound e.g rpm adjustment.
