Has anyone successfully replaced the optical drive bay with a hard drive caddy on Inspiron 17R models N7010 & N7110 ? In last 6 months of use, I used the DVD drive only twice, so I see no point in having it and much rather have a second hard drive especially when I got an external USB optical drive.

I did some online search and found few places who are selling it for $35-$45 but I want to get an opinion of fellow members here who had previously replaced the drive on 17R model and also provide a link to correct/recommended item.

I ordered a caddy from Newmodeus 4 months ago for my n5010...it was very easy to install, the 2 nd HD was recognized by the bios...all works very well, I was able to reattached the original door so the laptop looks the same.

I found mine on eBay (#260846880989) for $17.75 plus $3.71 shipping.

It fits, and works fine with a 500g Hitachi drive. It feels flimsy and inconsequential, but had all the screw holes and connectors in the right place, so I was able to transfer the single mounting screw bracket from my original DVDRW drive to the caddy, and it lined up properly, allowing me to secure it with that single screw.

I also found a cheap (plastic) external 'multibay' enclosure at Geeks.com for $11, which now holds the original Optaric DVDRW and a second 2.5" drive. That works good, and comes with a 5v/2a wall wart
