Im not sure about XP but in vista you just have to enable Digial Output/ SPDIF out as default device on the sound settings
-
where is that at on vista? My friend is having the same problem on his xps1330.
-
Right click on the sound icon.
-
do you have any other idea? -
-
Go into Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, switch to the Audio tab and change the Default device to "HDMI Audio" or whatever the HDMI is called. Click OK, and you should be good.
-
-
Right click sound icon, playback devices, digital output.
-
Then you need to install the drivers first. No need to shout we don't have to help you. Download the drivers from Dell's website.
-
I just got my Inspiron 1525 and I also don't get the sound out through HDMI. The picture is perfect but no sound. From the sound icon in the control panel, I have the internal speaker and spidf, but not hdmi.
Has anyone found a solution for this thread? -
I call Dell last night and got confirmation that HDMI doesn't have sound capability. It was only intended only for video. Strangely, there is an Intel High Definition Audio HDMI that is loaded and working. But the only place where it is seen, is in the device manager.
Anyway, if it is true that it is only video, then there is the s/pdif exit on the right side often mentionned as a s-video exit on many web sites and in the manual. But the manual also states that audio output can be obtain from this connector, so it would be a s-video connector with 7 wires instead of two. In the manual, it shows two types of adapter that allows to connect a tv with s-video or component, plus audio which can be either standard audio (probably stereo) or numerical audio. Unfornately the book doesn't specify the part number for this adapter. Technical support didn't know the part number neither did the Dell part department. It can only be found in the US Dell site, but not in Canada.
So the real important thing to know, is how does it displays on a 50 inches plasma, LG 50PC3D at 1024x768 60Hz. The image is full screen and really good. You could easily watch the tv monitor from 10 feets and browse the internet, for exemple.
But, as there is allways one but, many movies have a ratio of 2:45 and it is usually no problems to zoom, in other to get rid of the black bars. Strangely, the LG tv disables the zoom when receiving signals from a PC even if it is through a hdmi cable.
So as a HTPC, it is not good solution unless I find a software capable of zooming correctly, but that takes all the fun of using media center with a usb remote.
Since there isn't many thread on htpc, this one might help you decide between a htpc and a dvd player.
Btw, I like this inspiron 1525. A good buy even though I expected to connect it to my home theater. At least I know now what a htpc could look like. -
Try setting HDMI audio to default, log out and the log back in with the cable in. If that doesn't work, try restarting the comptuer with the cable in and set as default audio.
-
ummm.. in M1530 threads it seems that if you go to audio settings, you can change sound output to HDMI.
HDMI can definitely carry audio and M1530s at least can output audio through it. I don't know about the 1525. -
My Inspiron only has the SigmaTel High definition audio, with two possible output. The speaker|earphones or the spdif s-video connector.
I found that the Intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI is made by Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/audio/HDAudioDDI.mspx.
This device contains many files from Microsoft, but one from Intel which is IntcHdmi.sys ver 6.10.01.2035.
In my sound devices, I have:
Intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI
SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC
In my sound dialog from the control panel, I have only the two possible output for the SigmaTel.
So it looks like I have an HDMI audio as a device, but not recognized by Vista as a manageable sound device to select for output. -
I have new developpement. I tried to connect my laptop to my pioneer Elite receiver instead of directly to the LG plasma. As soon as I did that, a new sound device appeared in the sound setting window. It was the Intel High Definition Audio HDMI. Note that at that point the LG was off. Then I tried the sound test and it worked. Next I turned on the LG and I got a full screen picture of Vista. Then I started a movie "Over the Hedge". I had full 5.1 digital sound but the picture was not full screen when on the plasma while it was on the laptop. I change the player to window size and the image on the screen when back to full screen to show the vista desktop and my movie, still with 5.1 sound, all through the HDMI cable.
Then I don't exactly remember what I did, but the player failed and from that point, I was no longer able to get HDMI audio.
But I least so far, it is official, that HDMI connector has the hardware capability to send also audio 5.1.
But that is not all, next I tried to uninstall the Intel High Definition Audio HDMI device including removing the driver itself. Then I rescan for new devices, and Vista installed instead a new device named "périphéque de sortie numérique HDMI" which is probably in english, "Numerical output device HDMI", something like that. The version is 6.0.6000.16386.
It has 5 files: drmk.sys, hdaudio.sys, portcls.sys, sysfxul.dll, wmalfxgfxdsp.dll, all written by Microsoft.
With this device, I was able to quickly reconnect to my Pioneer and then to my LG plasma, which is connected to my Pioneer. Unless I display directly only to the plasma, I had trouble with resolution while having both screen ON. Also the sound device only support stereo sound.
So the solution will be to come back to the Intel High Definition Audio HDMI that has less bug.
I will for sure call Dell and ask for better support or a clear statement that even though sound can be obtain, it is not a supported feature.
Quite a chalenging quest to get this puppy working correctly. -
I came back to the Intel High Definition Audio HDMI, which is part the graphic driver installation from Dell, for the Inspiron 1525.
Since I had previously made Vista detect the audio device, I still have the other driver present, so it reinstalled itself. What I did is that I upgraded the device by searching the driver from the directory where the graphic driver is. There is a subdirectory for hdmi. Now I have the INTEL audio hdmi as before and as before, it doesn't show up in the Sound setup.
There is a bug with this driver. -
I just spoked to Dell support and after resuming what I have discovered, I asked if they support the audio for the hdmi port. The answer is that even though the hardware has what it takes, the design of the inspiron 1525 was for video only. The Intel chipset offers also audio but Dell had no intention of supporting it. At least for now because there is no real demand for it.
For now, the solution is:
1- make sure there is no hdmi cable connected
2- uninstall the Intel High Definition Audio HDMI and select to remove the driver as well
3- Click on the action menu and rescan for new hardware
4- Vista will install a different driver that supports only stereo but it will be available in your sound dialog.
The final solution will probably come from Intel as their chipset's drive evolves. Since there isn't that many laptop with hdmi, thus not that people like us who tries to get it working, there isn't much work trying to fix a problem they are not aware. That's the case with Dell, so probably is with Intel. -
SOLUTION
Intel has new drivers but Dell has not made them available yet. When you try to install the Intel drivers it says it has not been approved by the manufacturer.
Run Process Explorer from Microsoft.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
This is going to tell us where the temporary files the Intel driver extracts.
Go to the Intel site and locate the drivers for the GM965 chipset. This is the chipset used on the Inspiron 1525. Run the install and get to the point where it brings up a box stating it has not been approved by the manufacturer. Now, go back to Process Explorer and scroll to the end, it should show you the directory where the install extracted the files to. Inside that directory will be an HDMI directory. Next, go to the Windows Device Manager and select the HDMI audio device. Click the upgrade driver button and point it at the HDMI directory that the Intel driver extracted.
I'm writing this from memory from last night but that should be pretty close. I could not get my HDMI sound to work at all previously. As soon as I installed the driver it began working. It also seems to auto-detect if the HDMI is in use. If so it begins routing the sound, once unplugged it goes back to the speakers. Very nice. -
Thanks for the info, I will try it.
-
It works great. My Pioneer fully recognize the digital sound from the HDMI. I started a movie and I can see it is 5 channels (5.1).
The driver is at .intel.com/support/graphics/intelgm965. Download the zip file, so you will not have to use process explorer to locate the file.
Then go ahead and update the driver for the sound. No need to update the graphic for now.
I will contact Dell support, to update them with this new solution, thanks to JNONAME. Hopefully they will certified it to enhanced the feature of this portable. It is to their advantage. -
install the drivers

just a quick question - if you play mkv files with 5.1 sound will this work through the hdmi through amp? - going to pass audio and video to a home cinema amplifier via hdmi and then on to my lcd via hdmi.

Hello all,
I'm having the same problem as above. I've tried reinstalling the drivers many times, currently using the 6.10.0.2067 driver from Intel. I have an LG plasma 50pgx0 (my parents just got it, I'm home for a weekend and not sure exactly which).
The TV works fine using the HDMI and a cable box, then I just switch it. Laptop picks up the video switch (which by the way, my laptop normally runs at 1440x900, but when I plug it in, they both switch to 1360x768 and have black borders, any ideas on how to make then take the full screen? But I digress...). The audio device is selectable, and when I set as default or try the audio test, no sound. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
EDIT TO ADD: This is a pretty new Inspiron 1525 running Vista Home Premium -
Was able to resolve HDMI audio issues by connecting HDMI, placing laptop into Hibernation and when it comes out, Full Video & Audio. I have the factory installed Intel HDMI Audio driver 6.10.0.2035 & 965 Express 7.14.10.1409 drivers, which I just validated are latest DELL approved drivers.
That said, having the auto sensing and adjustment real-time with the newest non-Dell approved driver sounds worthy. I struggled to find the correct Audio driver post earlier........could you list the exact ZIP name/location on Intels site? -

I tried all these suggestions trying to get the HDMI audio to work with a LG TV using Windows Vista. The video was always flawless, but never could get the sound to work. I decided to try Windows 7 RC1, just to see if my results were any different. It works. Same laptop, different OS. So, the hardware definitely supports both audio and video. Thought I'd post my findings for anyone else that may want to try going this route if you really want to get it working.
-
I have the same problem on the HDMI audio can anyone explain to me step by step how to fix it please
-
Just wanted to let you all know. Windows 7 RC2 (7201) will install on the Inspiron 1525 with 100% of the drivers pre-installed. Audio over HDMI works absolutely great with Win7 over HDMI on my 1525. I tried getting audio over HDMI working with Windows XP for weeks to no avail, prior to upgrading to Windows 7. So, if you need audio over HDMI on one of the many Dell notebook's with an HDMI port I suggest you try Windows 7.

Hi folks
I have an Inspiron 1525 too and i'm using Vista Home Premium (32 bits). I've installed the Intel driver as the guys said and it worked great, but when i did that the audio out for the speakers disapeared. I mean, now i can only use the hdmi audio. Is there a way to install the intel new driver for the hdmi audio without removing the audio driver i have, which allows me to get sound with the speakers?
thanks for all -
-
Yes, early in the sound settings, on control panel, there were two options: to use the sound through the speakers (which was set as default) and use the HDMI sound. I could easily change from one to another setting it as default, but the hdmi out just didnt work, as everyone realised. When i've selected the hdmi driver, entered on properties, and updated the driver, it removed both drivers i had and installed just the intel hdmi sound. Maybe if could install a new driver for the speakers, together with the hdmi driver from intel it could work.
Does anyone know where can i found something like that to solve this problem? -
-
Thank you so much vbdino, I was struggling with this same problem with my Gateway M-7315u notebook. Gateway said that the HDMI on this is only for Video. But I was convinced that it will work with Audio as well. So after reading many posts and many sites for hours, I finally found yours and did what you did. I uninstalled the Intel Audio HDMI in Device Manager and rescanned than it installed and than BAM it was in my Sound Option for HDMI!
-
went to dell site. was told the best driver was already installed intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI.
-
Alright I have installed the latest drivers off the intel website for the chipset. And I still don't have an option to use HDMI. The only option I have is to use Speaker/Headphones and Digital Output Device (SPDIF out), these are both SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODECs. When I used the one method where I uninstalled the HDMI driver and just let is rescan, it worked but it said it was disconnected. Any help would be great
