ok i have read several threads from several different forums but my problem is still not solved so here it goes, and coodos to you that can help....

i am trying to get my hdmi to out put 5.1 surround, i am running my computer to the tv via HDMI and then a optical to my reciever, the tv IS setup to out put surround to the reciever and does so well as the computer is not the only device plugged in to the tv......

now as far as i know i have the latest driver, this is a dell inspiron 1525 with a gm965 chipset...

when i go to control panel > sound > configure the only option i have is stereo

    Untitled.jpg

also when i go to set up the properties of the HDMI > supported formats tab > encoded formats and test ANY of them i get a message saying that "windows was unable to play the test tone. support for this format will be disabled" but it does play a test tone for the sample rates...

this is a clean install of windows vista and the only thing that has been done is to update every driver to the latest version that i know of and to try and get this to output 5.1

    i thank any helpful assistance

Maybe the sound card drivers don't support 5.1?

It looks like the driver being used is the basic Windows HDMI driver. I don't know if that supports anything more than stereo? It looks like it doesn't on my laptop here....

well than how do i get it to .... i know that people are able to here 5.1 surround through there hdmi port, and well its pretty crappy for them to make it so you can't.... it must be possible to output true surround... other wise i'm just going to go and buy either an external or express sound card and i would really like to avoid doing so considering i have this HDMI port which claims to be high deffinition audio... how can that be limited to 2 speakers, quite a forsight in my personal opinion

try this - go to ur IDT sound control panel, under speakers/headphones / setup / speaker configuration, change from stereo speakers to 5.1 speakers.

    it might wont work.
i can be wrong but there are a few versions of HDMI
v 1.1 supports only stereo, v 1.2 supports 5.1 audio and v 1.3 supports 7.1 audio. as long as i know most of the laptops including xps 1530 have v 1.1
    good luck.
