So I am thinking of buying a really loaded inspiron 9400, check below for a reference machine that is pretty close to what I am going to end up with. I just talked to dell support to double check if it would be able to output 1920x1080 thru the VGA and/or the DVI output (to go into the VGA input on my sony KDL-40XBR2 which can do 1080p via that VGA input) and the dell support guy told me that NONE of their laptops can do that resolution via the VGA/DVI output port. This doesn't sounds right to me, as the tru-life LCD config of the 9400 has a native resolution of 1920x1200.... has anyone in here done something similar or have any comments? I just don't think the dell guy was correct..

mayby that he was true , but your think about the LCD that support 1920X1200 is no related with your wants that the output will support that .

Do you know if there is another video out on that notebook? I read somewhere in here about a limit to the resolution of what can run out of the vga output so maybe if you could even output as a component you might be able to go that route if the vga one doesn't work out.

Yeah that inspiron has both VGA and DVI output... On my TV I can do VGA direct, DVI to HDMI, or component.

I am looking to get a lappy (without re-morgaging the house) which can do 1080p so I can watch all my downloaded HD content at full res on my HDTV.

Maybe I am hoping for too much ;-)

possibly. Let me check the output information for you mind you I have the m1210 and my video card is the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400.

*edit* I don't have my component connection with me to try it out, sorry. :(

I have tried VGA out from my desktop to my HDTV and it looks *stunning* (no scanlines), I am just aiming for something more portable than lugging my desktop around the house ;-) Does anyone have any comments about the laptop config I referenced in my original message? Is getting the nvidia card rather than the ATI 1400 worth it for the occasional game?

The radeon X1400 is supposed to have a max external display of
2048 x 1536 / 24-bit (16.7 million colours). It would probably struggle with games at this res but I think it would be fine with 1080p media files over DVI.

If anyone has any experience please post as I would like to know for sure too as I’m about to order.

I think the DVI output on the back is unfortunately single link (though physically a dual-link port), which *I think* limits the resolution to 1920x1200....
