When I reformatted my new e1505 today I only deleted the windows partition (the largest one) and then reformatted that one. Everything was great until I decided to repair MD. Now I get a BSOD on regular start up and even trying to get into safe mode!
Here's the STOP error code...
STOP: 0x000000CA (0x00000001, 0x89BB5368, ox89B4f7B8, 0x00000000)
Googled the code and all I could find was something about it being a fatal error (no sh!t).
Please help!
PS
MD does work and I can see my media (videos, music etc).

Update:
Tried running a Repair off the Windows XP CD...loads the beginning drivers (blue screen with gray at the bottom, flashing the drivers being loaded) and BSODs even before choosing to repair or reinstall. -
Try deleting the new partition and the other one (not the FAT one that contains media direct) and start over again. The one you did not delete contains Dell's factory default image. It is used for backup and rollback to the state when it came from the factory. Delete it if you want to. The image was useless to me.

See my thread here.
For me it was pretty much a lost cause since I even got the same problem when tyring to access the drive as a slave on another computer. Easiest solution is to ask Dell for a new HDD. -

Wow, this is total crap. A friend of mine is going to me let borrow his 2.5 inch laptop HD USB 2 caddy so we can at least pull some data off the drive before I try to blast the partition from there. Thanks for the help.

I posted about this also, the thread name was "e1505 blue screen". I got the EXACT same problem. I reformatted, everything was working. Then after repairing mediadirect, same BSOD error! Can't boot into windows or reinstall windows. There has to be some reason for this. I sent my system back to dell and they sorted it out, even got a bigger hard drive from them. Just as a note, the tech guy from dell wrote that he repaired RAM and lcd display - I don't see how this was the issue, but it came back working. But seriously there has to be some solution. I followed the guide for reformatting on here exactly, so it makes no sense. After you save any data, I would recommend just chatting with dell and asking them for a new hard drive with factory image installed. Just make sure that they send you the correct rpm (7200 in your case). The first time they sent me back a 5400 rpm, and I had to argue with them to send me new one. Just one final suggestion, if you want to reformat again after this is all resolved, dont even bother with mediadirect. In my opinion, booting into windows to play media doesn't take take much longer - especially if you properly configure windows startup processes. I wouldn't risk messing around with mediadirect again, it is just too much trouble.

After this mess, I won't. Btw, turns out that the enclosure my friend is letting me borrow doesn't have the right connection for my HD to connect to (his is for pins, my HD is slot).

i think what you will need is an enclosure that supports sata to usb 2.0 for 2.5 inch drives. if you have really important data on there that you want to save, you could buy one online. here is one that i found: http://cavemonkey50.com/2006/07/coolgears-25-inch-sata-to-usb-hard-drive-enclosure/

I don't know if you have the EXACT same problem as I did, but if you did looking for an enclosure for your drive won't do you any good. As I mentioned earlier, I connected the drive to my desktop as a slave (using a sata connector) & received the same blue screen on my desktop when trying to access the drive.

Yes, well, I just received that very same BSOD with enclosure. Now I'm pissed.

I honestly don't know what is going on with this problem. The only thing I can think of is that somehow the Boot Manager is becoming screwed up. I know E1505guy only deleted his XP partition, but what about the rest of you?
I'm trying to find a common link so we can get this straighten out. -
I deleted the xp, backup, and restore partitions. I left mediadirect and diagnostic tools partitions alone. Thats odd that you cant even put the drive in an enclosure to access it...so basically it means that the drive becomes useless if you get this BSOD error after repairing mediadirect.
-
May try Linux as an option to at least pull my data off and delete the partition so I can at least put XP back on.
-
Let us know if it works...I have linux and I am curious to see if the hard drive can be accessed and wiped clean.
-
UPDATE:
Tried using some of the utilities off the Ultimate Boot CD (Google it)...no go. -
SUCCESS!! Downloaded the Linux build Knoppix...was able to access my hard drive and transfer my needed files with a usb flash drive.
Knoppix is downloaded as a bootable CD when burned as an ISO file. Booted from that and I was good to go!
Now to deleting all my partions (except the diagnostic partition) and reinstalling windows! Good riddance Media Direct!

I'm having this same blue screen. Luckily I dual booted Ubuntu before Windows XP became inaccessible. My situation is a little different because everything was working fine for a couple of months (both operating systems) and one day after installing a codec pack in Windows and rebooting I saw a Media Direct logo flash up on my screen...I didn't even know I had something called Media Direct.
Anyway, I'm going to probably end up wiping out the Windows partition, the MD partition, and the dell restore partition since there doesn't seem to be a resolution.
Dell really needs to get this figured out. The guy I spoke to in support had no clue what to do. He had me remove my memory and optical drive and run the hardware diagnostics to no avail. Then he told me to wipe out my entire hdd. -
ah you won't believe it. i had the same problem today with my M1730. reinstalled it from vista to xp, prepared the drive with mediadirect 3.5, had all the partitions ready, installed xp pro in C, then SP2, then MD 3.5 again and it installed fine. but when i reboot, i get the BSOD after it tries to load MD, even without me pressing anything.
if anybody finds a solution for this, i would really appreciate it if you could share.
thanks
