After days of an agonizing search, I placed an order for a 9300 on-line after seeing a 40% off coupon for Inspirons.

    Got the following rig:
    Pentium M 2Ghz
    XP Professional
1GB RAM (upgrade at Dell was cost effective w/ coupon)
    Nvdia 6800 w/ 256MB RAM
    17" UXGA Screen
    2915 Intel Wireless
    100GB HD
    8X CD/DVD Burner
    9 Cell Battery
2 Year Warranty w/ at Home Service
    MS Office Basic

Total all in cost (including NY Tax) -- $2038

Since then, I've gotten cold feet because 1) I've been reading more and more about 9300 screen light leak problems and 2) I've learned I can also get 40% off on the XPS2.

My first question is this: is the build quality and screen on the XPS2 better than on the 9300?

Second, would you reccomend buying the XPS2 with the same specs, only 512MB RAM instead of 1GB and the 6800Ultra instead of the 6800 for $2167 instead?

My uses are primarly internet, general office-type work, gaming, and DVDs, in roughly that order. I'm very concerned about build quality because I want this machine to last at least 3 years as my only computer.

Any info about cancelling Dell orders that haven't already shipped? Any advice is appreciated!

The XPS2 is a hulk and while it will game better, it's not going to blow the doors off the machine you have on order now. If a little more performance and more weight are worth it, then by all means. The quality is similar, but you have some risk either way. The good news is that if you don't love the 9300, you can send it back. So my advice is to let it ship, see if you like it and if not get the XPS2. Even if the code has expired by then, if you call Dell and explain the situation, they'll honor it. If you don't want to go that route, you can just call them now and cancel the order.

Ya, all the ultra 6800 is, is an overclocked 6800 i believe.
so if i were u, i'd just stick with the 9300 unless u don't like it when using it.

BTW, it should do pretty good if u get the new drivers for the gpu, and if u overclock it after that, u can hit over 4000 in 3dmark05 score's pretty easily

the xps2 is bigger than the 9300 and has black trim and internal LEDs that light up. in terms of 'quality', they're the same computer in terms of building materials.

    the LCDs are identical

Also, that cost effective upgrade on ram, still might be a lil better if u would have bought some corsair value ram.....a lil better preformance u would have seen.
