Okay. Long story short. My laptop caught a very bad virus. and I couldn't figure out what keys I press to bring up the reformat page so I attempted to reformat my laptop using the CD's that they give you when you purchase your laptop. Big mistake. My laptop is missing so many things, its just all messed up. Now that I found out what the reformat keys were, ctrl + f11, when I try to do it, the ctrl + f11 key wont work now. I don't know what to do. How can I make the ctrl + f11 key work so I can reformat my laptop back to its original factory stage please. I am helpless.

My aim is tj4eternity, PLEASE PLEASE feel free to IM me. I am so desperate to have my laptop back.

ctl + f11 ? you can format ... I never knew that but the best way is to format your system using OS installation Disks

Can you boot into Safe mode then and do a system restore? Can you be more specific on what kind of virus infected your laptop?

Well the virus is already gone. Because when I used the CD's to restore my laptop it deleted everything but the CD's didnt do a very good job because my laptop isnt functioning correctly, missing files, etc. I am just trying to figure out what I have to do to make the ctrl +f11 function work So I can reformat my laptop. I did it that way once before and it reformatted my laptop fine but now it wont let me do it. And I just want someone to help me fix that problem so I will be able to use ctrl + f11 and then ill be okay.

..What do you mean by boot into safe mode and do a system restore?

Dell wont help me because my warranty expired and they want 40 dollars so I can talk to a technician..which is bs so I am trying to get help other ways..

If the epicenter of your problem is in your bios, then try removing your ram and swapping it around. It forces a hard reset.

oh ok got it. so this might help you out since you probably messed up your installation by not inserting the media direct partition first.

Follow this guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=157838 by Les for a step by step guide on how to reinstall everything.

Yes, some dell laptos have that function in which it will return to its factory default state by pressing Ctrl + F11 on booting.

But in the newer ones that come with vista, Dell has built it into Windows Setup which you can do by pressing F8 during boot time

Why don't you just do yet ANOTHER clean install of XP? Shove your XP disc in the DVD ROM tray and away you go. Will that work, or no?

"Missing files", what files are you missing exactly? How exactly is your computer "screwed up"?
