I was at work with my e1505 which I bought just slightly over a year ago, turned around for a minute and when I looked back the screen was off and I couldn't turn it back on.
I powerd down the laptop and since then have not been able to power it up. At first i could at least attempt to get to the screen where windows wants you to pick safe mode/safe mode with network.. etc etc.. (I tried every one of those and it either did nothing or said that it can't find the windows/system folder)

I even tried booting up with an ubuntu live disk.. that ended up in a "kernal panic" error and failed as well.

Then I tried to restart and get back to the safe mode pick screen so i could pop in my recovery disk and try to recover windows... i couldn't even get there... it went to some wierd blue error screen (non windows) something i had never seen before and told me something was wrong with the memory.

I took my upgraded corsair memory out and replaced the original dell memory back in... Now when i try to start the machine.. all i get is flashing Caps lock and ScrollLock lights.. and nothing else....
nothing comes up on the screen and i can't even use the power hold down button to turn the computer off.. i have to unplug..
I have now tried different ram modules and none of them seem to be working.
I cannot get past the blinking CapsLock and ScrollLock lights.

    please HELP!!!
    what can i do?

Kernal panic can occur with windows? i tho that is an Linux only error message, but please someone correct me if i am wrong.

Molebhai, you probably installed some hardware or upgraded something recently or that wont happen. only thing you can do now is boot up from ur CD, and reinstall.

    Hello,

My name is Mike, I’m a Technical Analyst located at Dell corporate headquarters in Round Rock, TX. I’m part of an internet outreach team developed to interact with the online community regarding technical questions and issues that customers face with Dell products. I’ve read about your problem and wanted to offer some help.

With the symptoms you’ve described it sounds like the problem is with the motherboard. The error code you received (blinking Caps and Scroll lock lights) indicate that the system is not recognizing any RAM. Now, there is a possibility that there is something wrong with the memory itself, but 2 sets of bad memory seems very unlikely.

Try running the system with only one stick of RAM at a time and see if that helps, if not, try changing the memory slot you have the memory stick in and see if that works. If you still can’t boot with one stick of RAM and you’ve tried it in both slots, try a different stick of RAM. This will let you know if it’s a bad sick of memory (unlikely) or a bad memory module (more plausible with the symptoms described.)

If you find that the motherboard needs to be replaced and you are still in warranty (you can check warranty status here) then you can contact our technical support team at 1-800-822-8965 or you can go to www.support.dell.com and select another method of contact under the section called “Need More Help?” If you are out of warranty you would have to contact our spare parts department at 1-800-357-3355 and request a quote for the part. You can then search around online and see if you can find one cheaper. At that point you can take a look at our online teardowns here and see if it’s something you feel you could replace yourself.

I know these types of failures are frustrating to say the least, but I hope this information is helpful.

    Thank you,

    Mike
