I was browsing the HP site for laptops... and noticed that the battery prices are quite low. Upgrading from 6 cell to a 6 cell AND 12 cell is 130$ (upgrade to 12 cell is only $50 !!!!). Those are like the prices I saw on Dell several months ago, before the fire... and I really don't believe it should take more than 3-4 months for the battery prices to go back down unless that factory was completely destroyed.

Unless I'm mistaken and HP have always been selling their batteries for this low (if they can, why can't Dell?)... are the prices going to go back down now? Or is Dell just milking its customers for more cash.

Customize and Buy, and then check battery prices

Nice to see they let raging fanboys onto that "Dell Team". For the record, I have every intent to purchase a 1530, and never considered buying a HP laptop.

I'm just wondering why HP's battery prices are so much lower right now.

sorry, who's the raging fanboy again? lol

it's not just HP, Lenovo's battery upgrades are as cheap on their customization page. the more accurate question is why are Dell's prices so high?

Well, you still are because I take your sarcastic comment just because I mentioned HP has lower battery prices as a sign of fanboyism. Just because I want to buy a 1530 doesn't mean I'm a fanboy. Learn it.

And that's exactly what I tried to ask. So anyone want to actually answer my questions.

Business is business. Maybe its their different inventory systems having that kind of effect on them. I believe Dell doesn't keep batteries more than a day or two before its assembled and shipped off.

Also, there is also the effect that Dell just released and accepting orders for about 5 new models. (Vostro 1310 1510 1710 Studio 15 and 17) , all of which they would have no "stored inventory" for sure.

but Dell's battery prices have been constant for months before tey released the new models. as to not stockpiling beyond a day or two, why not?

They used to sell 6 cells for $99 and 9 cells for...something, I forget. The recent shortage of batteries has required them to raise prices so less people would buy their spare batteries and they can use them in the computers instead. Notice the ship time for the batteries also.

I believe Dell uses an inventory system called "Just in time"? They don't actually have the parts on hand when they sell you a system. Instead, they set virtual quota's based on manufacturer's numbers, and sell those systems.

For example, you buy a system today. Its set to be delivered next friday. They don't receive their parts until next tuesday, they build it on wednesday and ship it on thursday.

Apparently, its a system that cuts out alot of maintainence and inventory costs, which is one reason why Dell can afford to sell their computers for less than competitors (of course not always the case).

But again, this hasn't been confirmed, but from all the delays and order analysis here, the theory has some backing.

    Define "normal".

Whats normal for HP may not be normal for Dell. Cheap does not equal normal. Remember that.
