XPS M1530 out rules the Macbook Pro because it has basically almost same specs for $2000 cheaper.

How does the 1530 come out to be $2000 cheaper than the MBP?

And, while I think the 1530's a great machine, the OP sounds like he really really really hates Sony.

That's what's really holding the Macbook Pros back from the masses (even though they still sell like hotcakes). The costs are just really restictive and their configuration options are rather poor. Getting much better than previously, but still restrictive.

Yeah if Macbook Pro had a 8700GT GPU that I would understand but common how thick brained do you have to be to not know your laptop costs a lot. Same goes to Voodoo PC.

I'm not too sure where you got that number from, but I tried configuring a XPS M1530 on Dell.com, and I got close specs to the MacBook Pro for about $1800...the 2.4 GHz (with 256MB 8600M GT DDR3) MacBook Pro is priced at $2499, $2299 with Student Discount. Hardly $2000 off to me.

Unless the same powered XPS M1530 is $500, its not $2000 cheaper than the MBP ;).

Oh, and by the way, 1280x800 on a 15.4-inch XPS notebook? And people are already complaining the 1440x900 on the MBP is low.

Higher resolution panels will be available for the XPS early next year, but then the cost goes up again.

    $1800 for a Dell with those specs? Just last night I ordered an AR670-CTO with a T7700, 400GB (200GBx2) HDD, and a 17" WUXGA (1920x1280) display with a 8600M GT. $2300. A much better deal then.

I've been a Dell user for nearly 10 years. I'm on my 4th Dell laptop. I'll never spend my own money on one again. Toshiba and Sony are much MUCH better brands IMO.

    8600GT DDR2.

That ended the want of a 1530 for me.

And my SZ weighs in at 3.7 pounds. Slightly lighter than 5.7.

If you put your XPS beside a CR or TZ, nobody will notice your notebook. That's the big difference of design

I'm a college student so I need a light notebook with good power. I had a Vaio CR190, which is a 14.1" notebook @ 4.5lbs. Was pretty big and heavy so I got myself a SZ650N/C... 3.7lbs Big difference.

I can't imagine myself carrying that 5.78 pound brick. With the added weight of heavy textbooks, I much rather carry a lighter notebook. I don't need that much GPU power from my notebooks because I use it for school.

Yeap. I never thought of using notebook for gaming either. Maybe some simple games will do. I owned a Macbook Pro and its too heavy after stacked with my books so Im planning to switch to either Sz or Tz.

You have the perfect setup, a gaming desktop and mobile laptop, not everyone can afford that, so they may want to get the best of both worlds, a half-decent mobile gaming laptop. And of course the ultra gaming laptops are extremely expensive and heavy.

I get lots of requests from people to spec PC's for them, and I'm often asked to recommend a good all-around gaming laptop. I always explain that they can outfit a very nice gaming desktop rig capable of playing the latest games, PLUS buy a decent mobile laptop, for less than a so-called "gaming" laptop that won't perform nearly as well as the aforementioned gaming desktop. In some cases, their desire to game while mobile justifies (to them) the higher cost, but most go for the desktop+laptop route once they realize the cost vs. benefit.

Also keep in mind the resale value of your laptop when deciding on buying a new one. I have seen Apple keeping their value much longer than other brand names but I think Sony would also keep it's resale value far longer as compared to Dell which loses it's value really fast.

Too bad the Dell doesnt offer the GPU in DDR3 flavour or the option for an LED backlit screen.

it good to know that you finally find your Walmart... while ppl here still perfer to shop at Nordstrom. LOL

ppl pay extra for Sony because they like the design. Just like ipod is more expensive than other generic MP3 players. I am not a sony fan and rarely purchase their product. however, I pulled the trigger on a sony TZ instead Dell D430 since I consider appearance to be a very important factor.

If you like Dell better than Sony and went with Dell, good for you. You can't say Dell is better than Sony because its cheaper. Just like some ppl prefer to shop at Walmart while others like Nordstrom.

Who said anything about "ultramobile?" Ultramobile and high-end gaming are mutually exclusive -- you'll never have both.

If gaming isn't required, you can buy an entirely acceptable and perfectly mobile laptop for $1000 or less. A decked out gaming rig can be built for $1500 or less. $2500 buys you both and the desktop gaming performance is a helluva lot better than a $3K-$4K gaming laptop which itself is going to be much less portable than the $1000 laptop. So I don't see your point?

Your Sony CR weighed 5.4-5.5lbs and not 4.5lbs. The CR is actually pretty close in weight to XPS M1530. Also your SZ does not 3.7lbs it weighs 3.95 or 4lbs. The last gen SZ premium models weighed 3.7lbs.

I'm really dissapointed in the GPU choice of the XPS 1530.... there isn't any choice at all. You get the same GPU as you can already have in the Inspiron so...what's the point. Unless they put in a GDDR3 version of it, I fail to see the difference. A 8700GT would have been nice though not SLI like the XPS 1730. I don,t hate dells, I have one and I like it but I just don't see what the big fuss is about when the GPu is the same as the Inspiron already has.

Can this get moved to the laptop comparison forum? Or somewhere else? This thread has nothing to really do with helping Sony users with their computers, and its really just one guys way of spouting off about another plastic clad dell with a nice paint job.

Just so you guys know...the XPS M1530 does in fact have the GDDR3 version of the 8600m GT.

Oh, AND higher resolution screens are now available.

    See you later Macbook Pro...

    I am quite confused.

    The GPU in the XPS M1530 has 256MB of GDDR3 memory - < http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4135 >.

It's not the same - it's a much faster GPU.

You know, there's quite of bit of whinging about its size and weight - if you want the power, you have to sacrifice. I'm a big man (6'6", 250 lbs), so the ~6 pounds with the brick doesn't bother me at all. It's like most people carrying the Eee.
