Hello,
I have just received my Vostro, all is good excepted a boring noise of the hard disk which is like a fan, but never stops. (I'm sure it's the hard disk, I removed already it and the noise is stopping).
When you power on the computer or go simply on Internet, have you got noise or it's the silence (I don't talk about the problem of click clack of the hard disk)?
Kind regards
Jonathan

Do you have a 7200RPM HDD? My 1420 has 120 7200 RPM drive. It is doing giving out the same "boring" noise. I heard some drives are quieter than others.

No, I have a 5400RPM, Ref. Seagate ST9250827AS Momentus 5400.4
The noise is exactly like a fan which would turn at low speed. -
My Vostro 1400 also has the same noise - and it is being accessed every other second or so, even with not programmes running. I have the Western Digital Scorpio 1600BEVS - which SHOULD have been quiet!

My Vostro 1500 has the same issue. It has a 7200rpm Seagate Momentus 7200.2 drive (ST9160823AS). It is not the famous noise from HD heads when they are parked (I have already solve it with the power management options of my OS). The sound is similar to a fast reading of a data burst, but the HD led doesn't blinks while the sounds continues.
I have no idea what i the cause but it is quite annoying. -
Is it like a buzzing noise? My inspiron 1520 hard drive (toshiba 120gb) started buzzing and soon failed.
Hard Disk boring noise on Vostro (like a fan)
