    Hey everyone,

I have posted before about my HD making a clicking sound, which I have come to deal with is normal.

My next question is, and it could be a relatively opinion based question, but, how loud should a HD be? For instance, to me, it almost sounds like the fan is on! Surely it isn't, because I check for air, but it is definitely the HD.

I double checked by setting my HD to turn off after 3 minutes of IDLE time...once it turns off, it is totally quiet.

The noise doesn't bother me that much, I am just curious if everyone thinks this is a reasonable amount of sound coming from the HD. When the fan IS on, I can differentiate between the two, the fan being the louder, but even still...

    Any help would be appreciated,

    Thanks!

Depends on the drive. I used to have a 5400rpm 60GB Hitachi that was whisper quiet, so I was shocked when I got a 7200rpm 100GB Seagate that, like you said, sounds like a fan is on.

Yeah, this is a Western Digital...120GB, 5400RPM HD.

    Anyone have similar experiences?

I have exact same HDD and its noisy as you described. Probably a WD 5400rpm HDD is noisier than a 5400 rpm Hitachi or Samsung.

The 5400 rpm Hitachi i have in my I6000 is dead quiet.
